I was just completely uninterested with the interior design. So I thought I'd spice things up a bit. It all started after watching a film which was roughly based on a post apocalyptic future. I brainstormed a bunch of ideas based around the look of a city that has been taken over by nature. And the apocalypse idea ventured from there to war.

After experimentation with this over growth idea I started to think about the reasons of why a world would get like that. Obviously it has a lot to do with destruction and what bigger cause than war itself. I did a brainstorming sheet with thoughts on some outcomes if I further researched into war. There was a variety of outcomes I could of come to, I thought about the people it effects not just civilians but soldiers as well, I thought about families, children what the long term and short effects were. I discussed a lot of this with people in my group and decided I wanted to put my focus mainly on the soldiers themselves

Andddd this is where my ideas do a complete 360. What was green and pale and pretty is now dark and dangerous. To kick my new idea off I started by doing a little abstract work. I splashed colour, I cut up my work, I used what colours I associate with war. On the second image I tried to imbed an image of a face, can you see it?

As you'll see (bar one picture) I kept the whole colour theme throughout my sketchbook very muted. I stuck to reds and blacks and the odd brown to really emphasise on the deadliness of war and that there really is no bright side to it. Because my subject is visual communication, all my work is varied in the materials I use. Sometimes I smudge black chalk across a page to give it a ruined vibe sometimes I only used paint sometimes I only used words.

I angrily slashed black paint onto the page giving it different depths and textures and then did a few simple splatters of red paint that I hoped would look like blood splatter across the battle field so to speak.
The other image is my first experimentation printing using the letter blocks, I used red ink and used brown paper that I then ripped so it sort of looked like a country and placed it in the middle of the page.

I really liked the contrast on this page, how on one side is a young soldier with not a care in the world, with no idea what is going to happen and on the other is a soldier, older, wiser, in the middle of battle, either screaming orders or maybe even in pain. The complete opposite to the child next to him. I didn't want his face to be extremely realistic, I wanted it to stand out next to the photograph so I did it very blended but blocky colours, yes skin tones but a lot of variations to make it stand out.

First I'll start with the only colourful photo I did throughout this piece. I decided that for one image id not do a soldier, I'd do the man above it all. Who doesn't get his hands dirty but sends out the orders. I did it in colour to make him stand out against all the dark and dirty soldiers is drawn. I chose such vibrant colours again to make him stand out but to really give him that unrealistic effect, no he doesn't have pinky skin like a normal person, he's completely unrealistic like his ideas. How I decided on the style was actually just something that happened I wasn't sure what I wanted to do so I got some paint and just cracked on so to speak. I really like the sections of colour to build up his face so I also drew a soldier in this style which will be painted in complete opposite colours

The innocence of a child vs the chaotic destruction of war. I purposely did the lines very chaotic and scattered to emphasise on the innocence of the child and how confusing war can be to someone so young who doesn't fully understand the reasoning or the extent.
