There are many strategies that I want to implement both in my classroom and personal life that I have learned. A specific classroom strategy that I want to implement this week is 'wait time 2' where after a student responds, you give them additional wait time to elaborate.

I also want to continue to surround myself with positivity, as mentioned in my credo. Right now, being it is May and we have 15 school days left, it is really easy to have a summer mindset or even thinking about next school year. Someone just showed me a graphic that said, "Don't let next year's goals defer you from making an impact this year." That reminder came at the perfect time and was much needed! I caught myself already thinking about next years goals in terms of classroom layout and procedures.

By surrounding myself with positivity, that is only going to strengthen the relationships I have and hopefully have a chain reaction to strengthen further relationships!

I would like to implement the Wait Time and Should I Get Back To You strategies. The Not Yet strategy has been good for me in a personal way as I navigate the craziness of the end of the year. Facing challenges and taking on one day at a time has allowed me to embrace the challenge and realize that I can persist and persevere without having a fixed mindset. I hope to implement this with my students more next year as we only have a week left with kids this year. Now that this information has been brought to my attention I am more aware of it in my classroom however.

In this module, I've really loved the focus on wait time. I need to make sure in my own class that I give wait time AFTER they respond as well as before. I also really like the "getting back to you" strategy and would like to emphasize that more in my class that I currently am.
I liked Sue's idea of sentence starters for responding to other students work so I would like to explore how this would look in my class.
I think the more of a team approach to growth mindset we can take at the middle school level, the more successful our students will be.

As a first year teacher, wait time is a challenge for me! Its a learning curve for us educators to get used to practicing wait time. One thing that really hit home is the teacher in the video had a phrase or a song lyric that she sang in her head to help her keep time. HOW HELPFUL. I am an awful tell of time, especially when I have 30 sets of eye looking at me 1 second might feel like 10 to me. Having a go to statement in mind to repeat is a great pace maker/time teller.
I think wait time and allowing time for processing would help in my professional and personally relationships as it would make people feel at ease and comfortable in communicating and opening up to me, as they will know that I am someone who listens and really appreciates what they have to say.

I am eager to work harder at wait time and making sure I provide my students with adequate wait time to enhance their learning. I am also focusing on using the phrase "yet" with my students. When students say negative things about their learning or concepts they are struggling with I try to throw the word "yet" in there. It confuses them at first but allows for a great discussion on growth mindset!

I am hoping using the word "yet" more often will impact the relationships with those I work with more. I am hoping to share what I am learning through this course and help others direct their students towards a growth mindset.

Just for them to see how brains change when they are challenged is critical for them to understand.
'Not yet' is another key phrase that helps kids to be able to grow. I can't wait to continue learning so I can really wrap my mind around how I will teach this next year!!

Recently, my husband and I purchased a business. It is a meat market that he has worked at for years but it is a new world for me. I have a lot to learn and it is overwhelming at times. I just need to remember the power of yet when I am helping with the business. This challenge is helping my brain grow and my neurons to make new connections.

I have been trying to be very intentional with how I praise my students. That has been my biggest takeaway so far. I have been taking the time to stop students in the middle of what we are doing together to show them all of the hard work they have put in to get where they are. My kindergarteners will be graduating next week, so we have been taking time for them to reflect on what they are most proud of this year. They don't know what their final grades are, what level they are reading at, etc., they are just proud of all the growth they have made this year!

Moving forward, I really want to be more conscience of the wait time I give students. I want make a better habit of waiting a few seconds, even if some hands go up immediately. I have a handful of students that raise their hands right after I ask a question, and when I call on them they do not have an answer ready. Making a better routine of waiting will help those kiddos to process the information so they are ready to share.

I also have been making growth mindset apart of my daily routine at school with my first graders. I feel like it is just making me more aware of growth mindset in general. At school I am paying more attention to my language with my students, giving appropriate wait time, the way I praise students and the way I talk with my class about getting getting a wrong answer/question. We have had lots of class discussions on how mistakes are good and how they help our brain grow.

When I read about the praising wisely it reminded me of my children. They are young adults and the oldest has one more year of college. For years, on occasion, when I say something of praise to them, they will sometimes say “She is using her teacher voice”. This usually happens when I am busy, multi-tasking and not giving them my full attention. They were right and it has made me mindful to try not to do that and this course has reminded me just as it is so important not to do with my own children I need to be mindful how it is done with my students.

In my classroom it has impacted how I talk to my students when they are struggling. Using the phrase "not yet" and encouraging them to be ok with not having their work exactly right is ok because the important part is the learning that is happening. In my own life it has helped me feel like what I am doing right now is enough and that the things I need to work on will come and to be ok with not being their yet. It is such a good mindset to first have of ourselves so we will be able to teacher our students

I have already made two professional goals for myself. I would like to focus on letting students struggle and also get them to enjoy the struggle. Part of the challenge will be to get the other adults and collaborators that work with me on board but I think I can do it. The other goal I have for myself is to focus on an appropriate amount of wait time and staying connected with those students I need to come back to. I want to create a system that hold both myself and the students accountable for sharing their ideas. I look forward to adding to this list as the course continues!

I have really enjoyed everything from this module. I connected with the Growth Mindset talks on brain activity during struggle, as well as the research that supports growth mindset leading to deeper learning. Productive struggle clearly takes some coaching from the teacher, so we need to respond to failure and mistakes carefully, encouraging effort and praising the process. Allowing students to be in the pit a little bit longer through wait time is one specific way we can encourage thinking time and productive struggle. I look forward to including this strategy more intentionally in my classroom.

This week's learning has reminded me of many good strategies that I have not been implementing fully. Utilizing wait time more often and using the phrase "we will get back to you" allows students to realize that you do not need a response right away. Overall, I have been more intentional about implementing phrases such as "mistakes/confusion/struggle creates learning". For testing, I had students pick out a growth mindset quote that meant something to them. We shared what it meant to them in our morning meeting and they read their quote each morning before testing. I cannot wait to start in the fall right away with the implementation of growth mindset in the classroom environment.

Reflection:

This weeks class work has allowed me to reflect on who I want to be. I have had a rough last couple of weeks as the school year is wrapping up. I think this weeks 10 hopes were important and a great reminder of why I am here. My legacy starts now. These will legacies will not only impact my students, they impact the teachers, administration, parents, and paraprofessionals that I work with. I think writing these legacies out truly make me think of why I want to be teacher and why I am here. Most importantly, I have learned that growth mindset in my classroom starts with ME! I have to model growth mindset in order to create a classroom with growth mindset.

Exit Ticket Reflection

This week the list of 10 hopes really made an impact on me and my understanding of my career and who I am as a teacher and a person. I realized that it is really easy to get caught up in the day-to-day, so when things are not going well or how I "expect" them too, its seems like a big deal. Laying out these 10 hopes gave me a chance to reflect on the big picture and realize that I am doing exactly what I want to be doing and working towards my goals. I also think that this activity helped me to start thinking about what goals I want to begin working towards and when I would like to start doing that. I am definitely the type of person who likes to set goals, work towards them and move to the next and this activity worked out kind of like a road map for me.

Starting off with my 10 hopes was really a great way to start my week off. It helped me affirm my main goals of keeping my students safe and also to continue to grow as an educator. I really want to get better at reflection (I am really good at making excuses as to why I don't have time) and this was a great time to reflect. I also really enjoyed the idea of wait time two from the Key Characteristic #6. I know this is something that I can implement into my classroom and see immediate results. I was responding to the person below my response and they had given me another reason why it will help the students. It was great to have someone show me another view point.

I am really stuck on the message work hard and get smart. I have been trying to find time through out the last few weeks (especially with my 8th graders) to send this message. We have been talking a little bit about hopes and dreams and I have been really focusing on showing them what it means to work hard for something you want. I also have been trying to connect everything to hard work in school.

I really enjoyed thinking about my "hopes" as an educator. The end of the year is so challenging. It was a goof reminder for me of why I do what I do each day. I found the conversation on "Not yet" to be very interesting and this is something that I would love to hear more schools implementing. I am curious how it would relate to standards based grading. As a newer teacher, I think reflecting on wait time is huge! I have implemented some new strategies for that this year, but still feel like there are more the learn. As I move forward into the next week, I will reflect on using the not yet in my conversations with students but also with my coworkers. It can be easy to talk bad about students at this time of year as everyone is running low on energy and drive. I want my conversations with coworkers to be more upbeat and positive. That's my goal for the week!
