At the beginning of the story, Jackson mentions that he disappeared slowly from his family's lives and that he had a mental disorder that doesn’t fall into all the common types; hinting that his addiction to alcohol was to blame for his current state of homelessness. When he received money in the story, he used it to buy alcohol, scratch-off tickets, and even food for strangers, showing that he had issues when it came to saving money. This is a common trait of individuals who are an alcoholic or an addict of any kind. Jackson’s alcoholism was mentioned at the beginning of the story when he said, “we earned five dollars- good enough for a bottle of fortified courage” (Alexie 10). This statement helped strengthen the idea that he and his friends fit into the common Marxist category of a lower-class citizen. Marxism focuses on different economic classes and the ways in which these classes are separated. According to the ideology, Jackson Jackson and his friends would fall into the lower-class category due to their addiction to alcohol. They can’t seem to save up enough money throughout the story to get Jackson’s family’s regalia, and this seems to be due to their shared alcoholism. They make many poor money choices, and they seem to be more focused on their fellow homeless community rather than their task at hand. This is common for many people in this lower-class structure, they tend to be more motivated in helping their comrades than themselves, which can lead them to significant money issues in the future.
