The senate and consulship were open only to the Roman nobility, the patricians, but later (3rd c.) became open to the common people, the plebians.
Familial leadership was the domain of the "paterfamilias", the oldest male, who had legal authority over his family and made many of their decisions.

you could only have 2 consuls at any given time, they could veto eachother to keep 1 from getting too powerful and only had 1 year term. they had to alternate on a monthly basis on who was the more senior consul.
a senate was mainly a patrician. more wealthy plebians in the senate. the senate is composed of the aristrocracy. The leadership during the Republic was primarily with Consuls - who were basically the top of the leader hierarchy.
The Senate was also very important, made of 600 men.
