He graduated from London University in 1888, becoming a science teacher and undergoing a period of ill health and financial worries.

Upon using the time machine, the Time Traveler finds himself in the year eight hundred and two-thousand, and is astounded by the changes he sees in regards to both his surroundings and society". Believing that he would find a  prosperous future marked by modernization and technological advancements, he actually finds society divided into two social groups: The Eloi, who, despite leading a peaceful lifestyle, are lazy and don’t work, and the Morlocks, who live underground, are responsible for all the work and have resorted to cannibalism. Discovering how society will be in the future, he realizes progress doesn’t always mean quality.
