However, down the hallway, there was dead silence.

2.) Articulating a problem and its details:
The Student Life Lounge is divided-- only one half of it is social while the other is not. The proper use of the lounge is to interact with other students as opposed to a study area instead.

3.) Posing fruitful questions:
Why is one half of the room dark and the other half lit?
Why is the lounge not the same temperature at the rest of the BIC building?
The MAC is more appealing to the eye (colors on the walls, etc) but lacks in social interaction areas.

This activity is based on the class reading for Tuesday, 2/2, "Looking for Trouble: Finding Your Way into a Writing Assignment."

Add your group members' first names and last initial to your group note.

1. Go out around the campus and observe. Spend a few minutes quietly observing in a few different locations. Discuss what you have observed. Did you notice anything about the way people behave? What about the layout of the college? The weather? A sign or flyer? As a group, decide what observation might be most interesting and list it on your group note.

2. As you discuss what you observed, try to formulate a potential problem: an assumption, a gap, a theory, etc. On your group note, write a description of one potential research problem that you observed.

3. Pose some fruitful questions about the research problem. Remember that Why, How, and What are the more useful ones. List at least three questions on your group note.

4. As a group, discuss what is significant about this potential research problem. Write a few sentences about what is at stake on your group note.
