He led the struggle to replace the apartheid regime of South Africa with a multi-racial democracy. He was born in the eastern Cape of South Africa in 1918. He became lawyer and in 1950s he started a campaign aganist apartheid. In 1964 he was sentenced to life in prison and only in 1990 he was relased from prison. In 1993 he won the Nobel Peace Prize and in 1994 he was elected president. Then he stepped down as president in 1999.
