Make sure your goals lead you to one of the most improtant things in life: happiness. As the iBook says, if we want to set goals that make us happy, we have to “do what we love by focusing on things that mean a lot to us with people we want to be around” (page 12).

I love soccer and being physically fit.

Also when setting a goal to better yourself, think of what things you value most in life. The book says to “think through a simple list of life priorities, which might include things like family, friends, faith, health, education, profession, wealth and social impact” (page 12). By identifying these things, you can set goals to better these areas of your life.

My top priorities in life are: faith, family and friends, education, and health. By doing this training, I will be imensly benefiting my physical health.

4- Don’t Let Stress or Anxiety Get in the Way

A lot of times we have a lot of things going on in our life, and trying to reach a goal just adds to that stress. Goals aren’t supposed to do this. They are supposed to help us get to our full potential and help us achieve the things we want to achieve.

I usually have a lot of homework every night and its sometimes hard to find time to run. This can cause me stress sometimes, but I just have to remember that this goal isn’t some big deadline, but instead something I am doing on my own to become a healthier person.

The iBook describes Dr. Martin Seligman’s ideas of happiness as such:

“1. The first part of happiness is defined by high emotions such as love, gratitude and joy.

2. The second aspect of happiness involves actions that seem to make time stand still.

3. The final component of happiness defined by Seligman is finding meaning in what is accomplished in life” (page 12).

Goals are just small steps taken in order to eventually reach your dreams. As the book says, “Goals should be seen more as the critical steps we take on the path to our dreams” (page 13). Thus, our goals should be attainable and measurable. Sometimes it is better to take one step at a time.

One of my biggest dreams is to be able to run a marathon. Right now, I’m just working on increasing my speed and endurance. To break this down even further, one of my goals is to decrease my mile time to 7 miles per hour in the next two months by running every other day.

As the iBook says, “The most important thing to remember is that these are your goals, not your parents’, your teachers’, or anyone else’s” (page 11). You should set goals you want to achieve because you will be more motivated and more likely to achieve them.

Recently, I have decided that I am going to improve my speed and endurance for soccer. I am doing this because I want to improve, not because my parents or coaches want me to improve.
