America is ghost-free for Kingston except when she returns to visit her parents' home partially because being in her mother's presence and being back where she grew up reminds her of all of the stories that her mother told her as a kid. On page 109, Kingston said, "She sends me on my way, working always and now old, dreaming the dreams about shrinking babies and the sky covered with airplanes and a Chinatown bigger than the ones here." When Kingston is back at her mother's house, she feels as if all of the stories that her mother told her and all of the people that were hurt in these stories were meant to haunt and frighten her.

The ghosts appear when Kingston goes to her parents home because the Chinese culture she learned from her parents growing up is more prominent there. On page 102, Kingston is talking with her mother and her mother comments that she talks to ghosts all the time. Kingston, in response to her mother, says, "I have to make a living somehow." Kingston does not see these people as ghosts in her everyday life because she works with them. They are normal people to her because she grew up with both the American and Chinese culture.

It is no longer ghost free when Kingston returns to her parents home because this is where her mom is and the spirits of the ghosts are more prominent. Her mother told her all the stories about the ghosts and when she is with her mother, she remembers this all. The pressure of her mom comes back to her when she is home with her mother. On page 101 Kingston says “I’ll be back again soon,’ I said ‘You know that I come back. I think of you when I’m not here.”. This shows that she felt like she needed to stay because of her mother, but she had to to get away from this pressure. Her mom has a certain control over her especially with the ghosts.

I think that America is ghost-free expect when she goes back because she is once against surrounded by the ghost of Chinese culture that her parents live in as well as the ghosts of her past as a child. On page 102, Kingston's mother says, "You're always listening to Teacher Ghosts, those Scientist Ghosts, Doctor Ghosts." I think that Kingston's mother still views the Americans as ghosts because she is still living in Chinese culture, and feels like she does not fit in. Kingston does not feel this, as she know fits into America. With her parents, she notices her differences more because she is once again in this Chinese culture and feels like she maybe does not fit in with the Americans.

She felt ghost free because the chinese culture is revolving around her family and Kingston is trying to avoid that culture because of how she was treated. She was favoring being a American rather than being a Chinese female when in America.

America is ghost-free for Kingston except for when she returns home because she cannot see the ghosts on her own. Her mother tries to scare her through talk stories which makes the ghosts become present for her. When she is not near her parents, she forgets about the fears, but she remembers them when she is back home with her parents. On page 108, Kingston talks about how she never has to deal with ghosts or terrible hardships when she is without her parents. The presence of her mother causes her to be worried and on edge, making her unable to be independent or strong near her parents.

America was ghost-free until she went home because Kingston's childhood was build on talk-stories about the bad things in the world. Also when she was not home she could be anyone she wanted to be. She could not be herself complete because she was trying to make her parents happy, not herself. Her mother tells her thinks that scare her but when she is doing her own thing, she is not scared to do normal things. "When I'm away from here," I had to tell her, "I don't get sick." She is free and happier on her own.

Ghosts seem to represent people without purpose by the end of "Shaman." Kingston's mother says to Kingston on page 107 that "I want you here, not wandering like a ghost from Romany." While Kingston's mother does not understand american culture very well, she considers most workers ghosts. Meanwhile, Kingston is more familiar with american culture, and instead sees people who practice a way of life she does not recognize when she travels to her mother.
Despite the large sections dedicated to "ghosts" on pages 101 through 108, I am still confused as to who should be considered "ghosts".

America is ghost-free for Kingston except for when she returns to visit her parents' home because of how she is told about many different, often fearful, situations through talk stories. On page 108, Kingston says, "'When I'm away from here... I don't get sick. I don't go to the hospital every holiday. I don't get pneumonia, no dark spots on my x-rays." This can represent how Kingston is negatively influenced by Chinese culture because of how she describes how she is better-off in her new life, which is influenced by American culture. She no longer bears the weight of ghosts as a weak girl in China, but rather sees herself as a strong woman in America.

America is ghost-free for Kingston except when she returns to visit her parents' home because Kingston grew up listening to talk-stories that talked about the negativity in the world. Kingston has created a negative connotation about her home due to the talk-stories. "You're always listening to Teacher Ghosts, those Scientist Ghosts, Doctor Ghosts" (Kingston 102). Kingston has grew up looking at the world as a scary place filled with ghosts. This is due to her mother. The contributes to Kingston's anxious feelings whenever she visits her mother.

When Kingston returns home, she feels as if she in not ghost-free because her mother was the one to put that stereotype on Americans, and Kingston cares deeply about her mother. She cares about her opinion and must take into account of her perspective on Americans. The book quotes "What frightened me the most was the Newsboy Ghost, who came out from between cars in the evening light" (Kingston 97). If Kingston did not care about her mother's opinion, she would not be affected by these ghosts.
