Ima dobro razvijene prednje noge prilagođene za kopanje, a koje završavaju pandžama.

Poznato kako krtice mogu napraviti iznimno velike štete:

upropaštavajući gredice, uništavajući posijane ili posađene biljke, potkopavajući i trgajući korijenje, zatrpavajući iznikle biljčice te uništavajući cvjetnjake i travnjake. 
Štetna je i zbog toga što, hraneći se kišnim glistama, izravno utječe na pogoršavanja strukture tla tj. na narušavanje plodnosti tla. S druge strane, pošto živi u tlu u kojem kopa brojne hodnike, krtica je dijelom i korisna jer prorahljuje i miješa tlo, a hrani se i ličinkama štetnih kukaca.
