1. March 13th, 1954- Battle of Dien Bien Phu
-It was important because it was the decisive battle of the first Indonesian war

2. May 7th, 1954- The victory by Vietnamese forces brings an end to nearly a century of French colonial rule in Indonesia

3. July 21st, 1954- The Geneva Accords divided Vietnam in two at the 17th parallel
-It was important because of the pending elections within two years to choose a president and reunite the country.

4. Nov 2nd, 1963- Ngo Dinh Diem is assassinated

5. Jan 30th, 1968- North Vietnamese and Viet Cong forces began an offensive that will eventually throw 85,000 troops against 5 major cities
-It was important because it weakened the U.S public support for the war in Vietnam

Communist forces ended the war by seizing control of South Vietnam in 1975, the country was unified as the Socialist Republic of Vietnam the following year after.

The Proxy war, or also known as the Vietnam war was apart of the overall Cold War confrontation. The Vietnam war also took part in the American struggle against the spread of Communism in the world. It did not involve a direct confrontation between two superpowers. It connects to present day because communism is still a thing today in Vietnam, it just got reasserted, and or moved around for the government, politics and society today. It also connects to present day today because it was the first war to come into AMerican living rooms nightly. Also it was the only war that ended defeat for American arms.
