Meitner went to formal schooling which ended at age 14. Unlike her brothers, she wasnt allowed to go to grammar school to prepare for a college education so Lise's father paid for a private tutor until she was eligible for University. Meitner entered the University of Vienna in 1901, studying physics under Ludwig Boltzmann. She eventually obtained her doctorate degree in 1906.

Meitner was influnced by Niels Bohr, Ludwig Boltzmann, and Max Planck. Neils Bohr was a Danish physicist who made contributions to understanding atomic structure and quantum theory. He received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1922. Ludwig Boltzmann was an Austrian physicist and philosopher who suceeded in the development of statistical mechanics. Finally, Max Planck was a German theoretical physicist whose discovery of energy quanta won him the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1918.
