I think Abel had a lot of childhood trauma that led him to be the way he is. The famous saying "The abused becomes the abuser," is right in this situation. Something in his childhood had to happen for him to end up an alcoholic, with anger issues. I think he got into drinking because he thought that would help him feel better about his past; but it just made his anger and suppressed emotions worse. I think the only way he would be able to change/get better is years (maybe even decades) of therapy/anger management classes and AA (Alcoholics Anonymous). Even then I think that he would still have a lot of issues that would continue to appear in his marriage(s).

In relationships that are emotionally and/or physically abusive, it can be difficult to leave. Studies show, " Victims of emotional abuse frequently say they stayed for fear of breaking up the family unit or they put up with the abuse for the sake of the children. They may be religious or strongly feel that divorce is not an option. Financial and economic control often comes hand in hand with emotional abuse". Or they could be with someone who wasn't always abusive or wasn't always the way they are. They hope and pray that their partner will change and go back to their old ways. Or the abuser will love-bomb them with gifts and affection, or good times, or they will change temporarily to keep you stuck in the loop. In these relationships, it's difficult to understand why they don't leave until you are in that situation.
