We observed that the Dominican society in this book was very biased and racist in many ways as the text provides us with the different parts where these characters clearly show that kind of behavior. My role was to understand and take in all the information given to all the group through the quotes. These quotes helped me to understand why people had different views on this type of theme and why it was so important to discuss it. In general the quotes helped me to understand how people see the book differently.

I think this says a lot about her position towards the book and how she feels by reading about gender injustices in the world. That made me wonder if her context, a sexist country with hundreds of abusive cases towards woman, have influenced the meaning she was towards hypermasculitnity.

Did the discussion open any new interpretations about the text?

With her extraction of quotes, I can further understand why Oscar felt depressed about his life and why he used science fiction to feel comfortable in a world which is not full of prejudices and stereotypes, where you can be whoever you want to be. As I mentioned before, we also got to understand about the extreme discrimination cases of woman, girls that acted as society normed but were partners with abusive people. Maritza, for instance, got away from a relationship with Oscar, an aggressive person, to be with men that constantly hit her, “

We analysed these quotes and try to think about what they represented to us, what they showed, and the message behind them. It also pinpoints on the fact that the same group of themes appear over and over again throughout the first chapter: hypermasculinity, Dominican culture and sexism. This makes it clearer that the author is trying to spread awareness about this issue by showing the consequences of such themes.

The discussion did not open up many new interpretations about the text as we had already talked about similar things in past discussions. Nevertheless, as I said before, the discussion did make it clear what the author's intentions were by portraying the different themes and we could perceive how people can be affected by them and thus, spreading awareness about it.

We got to the conclusion that probably the reason why this author wrote this book was to spread awareness about the discrimination and social inequality at that time, and how surprised we were on the way women at that time normalized gender inequality and accepted it without feeling the need for the situation to change. Talking to the other team members and listening to the answers they gave to the questions I wrote also made me think about things I haven't considered before like for example the way Spanish language could also represent hypermasculinity in the text.

Identify the most important ideas that surface from the discussion
In my opinion the idea we discussed that is more important is Lola's personality. The fact she stay truth to herself and had such a strong personality in such a toxic masculinity culture and household is indeed admirable. Women are always supposed to have a docile personality and men are supposed to be the strong ones, however in this case Lola is the strong one and Oscar has a more fragile personality.
What was your role in the discussion?
I helped interpret quotes and give my opinion and perspective. Also we all gave feedback to each other.
What can you take from the discussion? Did it open any new interpretations about the text?
What I took from the discussion is each person has a very different opinion and interpretation of the book, even though we all got to the same conclusion or agree in certain things the different members of the group had their own reasons why. For example we all agreed Oscar was struggling a lot because he wanted to fill the shoes of a Dominican man. I thought that Oscar had succumbed due to the pressure his family had put on him from a very young age and was unable to keep the standard he was ask to have, while another member thought growing up he tried to fit into the American culture while trying to still be in the Dominican one as well and ended up failing in both.
