Statistics provided on the CDC website report 10% of LGBTQ youth surveyed were threatened or injured with a weapon on school property, 34% were bullied on school property, 28% were bullied electronically(mostly through social media), 23% of LGBTQ students who had dated or went out with someone had experienced sexual dating violence in the prior year,18% of LGBTQ students had experienced physical dating violence, 18% of LGBTQ students had been forced to have sexual intercourse at some point in their lives. Because of this bullying and harassment, LGBTQ students were 140% more likely to not go to school at least one day because of safety and/or bullying concerns.(Family acceptance of teens in LGBTQ community slides) Many teens stated that acceptance from family greatly impacted their emotional well-being and self esteem. LGBTQ members who reported having supportive family members were less likely to suffer from depression and suicidal thoughts. While others reported that their families acceptance gave them the confidence to seek out help for their depression and suicidal thoughts and their families were a big part of their therapy. On the other hand, teens of the LGBTQ community whose parents did not accept their lifestyle reported feeling shunned and like an outsider in their own home.
