Metacommentary is basically explaining what you mean, guiding your readers through what your paper says and the thoughts behind it "Essentially, I am arguing not that ____ but that ______." (TSIS, 144), providing you access to your more specific ideas and giving an outlet to your more general ideas "In sum, then, ____" (TSIS, 146).

Metacommentary works really well to help with recognizing some implications of our ideas that we didn't initially realize were there. It differs by being more like "a chorus in a Greek play that stands on the side of the drama unfolding on the stage and explains its meaning to the audience." (pg. 138)

Metacommentary is useful becomes it helps avoid confusion for the readers. It adds more depth and context to an essay. The meta is like a second source for your essay. It adds to your main text by explaining what you mean or do not mean with what you say. Metacommentary "help you extract the full potential from your ideas, drawing out important implications, explaining ideas from different perspectives" (pg. 141).

While the main text directly states your argument, the meta text guides your readers into processing and understanding what you said. The meta text is a useful tool because if you just say what you mean up front, this could only confuse your readers. Writing could be interpreted in many different ways, so it's better to use another text to explain what exactly you mean. As it says in the chapter, "As a result, no matter how straightforward a writer you are, readers still need you to help them grasp what you really mean." (pg. 140)

Metacommentary is extremely important for transitioning from someone else's writing to yours. If your audience is able to misinterpret your writing, then your entire argument could be blown out of the water. Meta text is used for "state-managing how your claim will be received" (pg 146). This can be done by making your text sound simpler, or rephrasing your own words in way that's easier to understand.

Metacommentary is a useful tool in writing because it basically is "a sort of second text that strands along-side your main text and explains what it means." (pg 139). It is always good to explain yourself more and add examples so that the readers will not be confused on what you are actually trying to say. Metacommentary helps the readers more understand where you are coming from and where you are not coming from.

Metacommentary can be defined as a way of commenting on your claims and telling others how and how not to think about them. It helps you add both length and depth to your writing. Extracting the full potential from your ideas, drawing out important implications and explaining ideas from different perspectives. Other moves that function as metacommentary include entertaining objections, adding transitions and framing quotations to answer the questions "so what" and "who cares."
