International Global Economy is a sub-field of International Relations (IR), which combines in itself a great variety of theoretical perspectives and methodological approaches with competing or even contradictory prescriptions for research methods in order to cover up the gap between the studies of politics and economics, national and international.

Apart from the three common approaches to IPE, which include economic nationalism, liberalism, and critical theory, some of the other prominent approaches are case studies and large n studies, rational choice theory, institutionalism, and constructivism.

A case study is basically a detailed examination and analysis of an issue, serving as a base for the theory-building process. Case studies could be divided into the categories of descriptive case studies, used to provide the raw material for the scholars, "most-likely" studies and "least-likely" studies, revealing applicability of a theory, comparative studies, used to better explain single cases. Large n studies applied for the purpose of adequately dealing with a large number of cases, which through the use of databases detects similarities of the indicated cases.

Another approach is the rational choice, which adopts an economic explanatory framework with the main focus on the individuals using cost and benefit analysis in order to maximize gains and minimize losses. The indicated approach together with its sub-field labeled as game theory, which includes prisoners dilemma and chicken and stag hunt, provide an extremely useful way of understanding certain patterns of political behavior, for instance, explaining the failures of the system of majority rule to represent the public, demonstrating why protectionist measures can prevail despite the benefits of the free trade, etc.

Institutionalism as a methodological approach limits itself to the focus on the role of formal and informal institutes in global and national politics. Often used by liberal scholars, it studies the role of institutions and the varieties of capitalism in shaping political agenda.

The last approach discussed in the chapter is constructivism, which core argument states that the world and what we can know about it is socially constructed. The approach regards ideas, norms, identities, and culture as factors that create models on how we understand the world and other people. The adherents of constructivism, IPE is constructed of the three "structures": set of material conditions and practices, set of normative statements, and an academic discipline, while also arguing that it should not be limited by the use of exclusively rational choice or institutionalism perspectives.
