This causes his mother to be angry at him. 
Being Black in New York City doesn't leave Sonny with many options. As a child, his home was not a safe or stable place to live. They were often evicted and had to move. Because of this, he can't settle down and raise a child, or work at a steady job. This leaves him vulnerable to addiction. Once he gets addicted to heroin, he can't get out of the vicious cycle of poverty and drugs.
