Trypanosoma brucei rhodesiense takes 2 forms, depending on the subspecies of the parasite involved: Trypanosoma brucei gambiense is found in west and central Africa. It accounts for 97% of reported cases that caused a chronic infection. Nowadays, this form represents under 3% of reported cases that caused an acute infection. The first signs and symptoms are observed within a few months or weeks after infection. This disease develops rapidly and invades the central nervous system of the body.

Wear protective clothing, such as long-sleeved shirts and pants. Tsetse flies are attracted to bright and dark contrasting colors, so wear anything but these choices! Use bed nets when sleeping or sitting in areas that have them. Look inside vehicles for tsetse flies before getting into them and absolutely do not ride on the backs or beds or trucks, because the Tsetse Flies are attracted to the dust the vehicles kick up. Stay away from bushes at all costs! The Tsetse Flies rest in the shade of bushes and will attack if disturbed.

Treatment involves numerous strong drugs to kill the parasites at the source. Example are:

Melarsoprol: discovered in 1949, it is used for the treatment of both gambiense(sleeping sickness) and rhodesiense infections. Melarsoprol is a highly toxic drug derived from arsenic, with severe side effects, and hence is used only for the treatment of the second stage of African trypanosomiasis with involvement of the central nervous system.

Eflornithine: very so much less toxic than melarsoprol. It was registered in 1990 is only effective against T.b. gambiense.

Nifurtimox: The Nifurtimox-eflornithine combination therapy, NECT, was introduced in 2009. Nifurtimox is in a class of medications called antiprotozoals. Eflornithine is a drug of choice, alone or in combination to treat people with African sleeping sickness caused by T. b.
