         <title>Artifact #14 - Hip</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>When I first came to college, I had a friend originally from Maryland explain something by saying "are you hip to this?" and I had absolutely no idea what that meant. I later had her explain to me that this meant "are you up-to-date on this?", but when I think of hip I would normally think of the body part.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>My parents had come late to my sister's soccer game and when they got there, my cousin told them that my sister had scored a "sick goal". My dad asked if she got fouled or got a penalty or something because he thought that this was a bad thing, but really my cousin was explaining that my sister scored a really impressive goal.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Another thing I heard being used when I first came to college was "DMV Slang" and people talking about words that were considered DMV slang. When I think of the DMV, I think of the Department of Motor Vehicle where I sit for hours waiting to renew my license. It took me a few days to realize my friends were talking about the D.C., Maryland and Virginia area when they said the DMV.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>The other day told me that she was "ghosting" a guy that she had been talking to, and I had never heard that term before but later put together that she was not talking to him or answering his messages. When she first used this word I thought she was talking about something related to an actual ghost.</div>]]></description>

         <title>Artifact #13 - Pressed</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Pressed in Maryland is used in a context like "why are you so pressed?" or why are you so interested, in a bad way. When I first heard this I thought it was more like "why are you so pressed for time?" as in a time constraint, which is very different from the way my friend was using the word.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>To older generations, hook up means to meet up and hang out with a friend but to younger generations a hook up is a sexual thing, so sometimes my mom will say "you should hook up with your friend while your home" and it sounds weird to me but really she means to hang out.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>My English teacher uses the word pepper to explain fluently adding something into an essay, and I had never heard that word used in that context before that class. When I used to play volleyball, peppering means to set and bump the ball back and forth with a partner to warm up.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>I was eating dinner at my friend's house one night and her mom asked me how the food was. I said it was great and did the "OK" gesture at the same time. Where she is from, that same gesture actually means the opposite and it is used like a zero, so she was confused when what I said and my hand gesture did not match up.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Another thing I had to get used to was every time I would go to my friend's house her mom would kiss me on the cheek. While this is completely normal in her culture I was not used to it as first because that is not how I usually greet people.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Before coming to college, I only thought of tailgating as hanging out before a football game. In my building there was a sign that said "no tailgating". At first I was confused as to what this meant, but then I realized that it was referring to letting people into the building without using their swipes. In this context, it was a security measure.</div>]]></description>
