Unlike America during this era, England had no separation between church and state. Traditionally, the country was ruled politically by the king and spiritually by the Roman Catholic Church. However, Elizabethan Era was the first generation in which the monarch, rather than the Pope, served as the country’s spiritual head.

With Queen Elizabeth on the throne, the religion of England leaned more towards Protestantism. In order to not cause much uproar, Elizabeth was lenient toward practicing Catholics, however specific laws, such as fining those who did not attend church, kept the Church of England firmly in place. Some Elizabethans were strong supporters of the Protestant reformation, some were stubbornly Catholic, some were indecisive, and some still practiced Puritanism.

Despite Queen Elizabeth ruling England, during her reign England was still fiercely patriarchal and there were laws that heavily restricted what women could and could not do.

The Elizabethan Era is the era in England in which Queen Elizabeth ruled; 1558–1603. This era is often depicted like the Golden Age, although it is not considered apart of it because of the significant rise of poverty. Some people like merchants and nobles were increasing in wealth as the economy began to rise, but many common people still lived in poverty. During this time period though, there was an outpouring of poetry and drama and many people became poets, musicians, writers, and scholars.

The Elizabethan Era was also referred to as the English Renaissance, most notably for the innovative and creative artistic achievements of the era. Elizabeth's love for the arts, especially music and theater, laid the foundation for many English writers' careers, specifically Christopher Marlowe, Sir Philip Sidney and last but not least, William Shakespeare. There was also important developments in musical composition for the Anglican church, thanks to Thomas Tallis and William Byrd, as well as architecture, with the rise of prodigy houses.

There were many horrific forms of punishment during the Elizabethan Era of England. The punishments varied by crime. If you were a heretic, or someone whose religious beliefs opposed ones that were generally accepted, then you were to be burned alive at the stake. If you were a traitor, you were to be hung and dismembered alive. Public executions for people to watch would also take place during this era, these events would draw large crowds. All of these forms of justice were typically done in order to establish authority.

Romeo and Juliet was a love story between 2 characters that are supposed to be enemies, but end up falling in love. This story has themes of death, love, hatred, and destiny. Romeo and Juliet aren't supposed to fall in love because their parents were enemies. What we found interesting was that love can be dangerous especially at their young ages.
