Black Lives Matter (BLM) is a movement created in 2013 after the acquittal of George Zimmerman who shot and killed the innocent seventeen-year-old boy, Trayvon Martin (ABC 2018). This movement was formed to fight against racism and police brutality. Most protests and major events revolving around Black Lives Matter, have occurred in the United States; however, the Black Lives Matter Global Network Foundation was founded in Canada, United States, and United Kingdom in 2013 after the trial of Trayvon Martin (Britannica, 2021). A very important protest in Black Lives Matter history occurred after the death of Freddie Gray in Baltimore Maryland, in 2015. Gray was arrested for having what was “assumed to be a switchblade”, was denied an inhaler when he was having breathing issues, and then was tossed into a police van without a seatbelt while handcuffed, which goes against police policy (ABC, 2018). The officers were believed to be swerving and making sharp turns on purpose because they knew Gray had no restraint since he was in handcuffs. Little did they know that he would injure his spinal cord so bad that he was put into a coma and then died a month later. Protesters in Baltimore were passionate and outspoken because police brutality has affected the African American community so much throughout history and it is entirely unfair.

A very important event to Black Lives Matter was the death of Breonna Taylor. It was early in the morning of March 13th, 2020, Taylor’s home was barged into for a narcotics raid, and they fired 32 rounds in the house, killing Taylor in the process (Booker, 2021). The suspect the police were searching for was not even in Taylor’s home. The world was currently on hold due to the Covid-19 pandemic when this happened so since everyone was home and not as busy, protests were prominent. Unfortunately, like many more cases before, Taylor never received her justice as the cops got to walk away free (Booker, 2021). However, the most important moment in Black Lives Matter history occurred on May 5th, 2020. On this day George Floyd pleaded to Minneapolis police that he could not breathe, and they knelt on his neck, which led to his death (Graves, 2020). The protests that stemmed from his awful death were legendary. The killing of Floyd was played on the news, so protests occurred all throughout the United States and had even bigger protests than the ones for Breonna Taylor. The protests and Black Lives Matter movement grew to where even celebrities like Lebron James and The Weeknd were marching and speaking out against police brutality and using every platform that they had in order to advocate for this amazing movement and cause. This was the most important event because according to the news, Derek Chauvin, the officer that murdered Floyd, is going to be facing time in jail as he was found guilty. We will find out exactly how much time in the sentencing in June. This is arguably the biggest case in Black Lives Matter history, as justice will finally be served.

Black Lives Matter has done so many great things regarding social justice, but Black Lives Matter stands for more than just fighting against police brutality. This movement fights against stereotypes that suggest all African Americans are criminals and most importantly this movement fights for social, economic, and educational equality. Black Lives Matter will continue to thrive and fight for these great causes until they get justice for everyone.
