I suoi genitori si erano trasferiti per lavoro, dal momento che il padre lavorava alla costruzione del canale di Suez. Giuseppe avrà sempre un ricordo profondo del deserto che osservava nella sua città di infanzia. Resta orfano del padre che muore in un incidente di lavoro (1890).
