Silvia Cau= Degree and Ph.D. in Physics at the University of Cagliari, is a researcher in the Astrochemistry and Astrobiology group at the INAF-Astronomical Observatory of Cagliari.
It deals with interstellar powder, molecular excitation and interstellar chemistry models.
He is currently part of the Sardinia Radio Telescope Operations Team (SRT), and was part of the SRT Scientific Validation Team during 2013-2016. He is author of scientific articles on peer reviewed international journals.

Since April 2011 he has been responsible for the INA-Astronomical Observatory of Cagliari and on the outreach activities of SRT. He is responsible for the development of didactic activities for schools of every rank and grade, coordinates the management of the dissemination events, coordinates and manages public outfitting (Planetarium, Museum, Auditorium, Classroom) of the new INAF-OAC headquarters.
Since 2015 he has been formally responsible for the SRT Macro WP Outreach, for which he coordinates activity with the public, managing communication to the territory, and setting up public spaces (Visitor Center).
From May 2016 he is a member of the Education and Divulgation Working Group of the INAF Communication Office, chairmanship, under the responsibility of Dr. Stefano Sandrelli. He deals with new forms of didactics, with particular regard to new technologies and inclusive education.

In my country - in Madrid - is the CAB (center dependent on NASA) and do important research. One of the instruments of the Curiosity - sent to Mars - was designed by the Spanish researchers of the CAB. One of the fields of study is the study in the hard conditions of Riotinto and I teach my students that, humbly, we look for microscopic life and not green little men.

In my research I found Athena Coustenis, who is is an Astrophysicist at Paris-Meudon Observatory with a specialty in space exploration working, and studying the outer solar system, the giant planets, their satellites and the exoplanets. She was heavily involved in the Cassini-Huygens mission to Saturn and Titan. Her passion for Astrobiology, led her to write a book on the subject in 2013. It would be a nice idea to make a research about her in my class.

In Italy there is no degree in astrobiology so we haven't here any astrobiologist. Just in the biology faculties you can find, only in some universities, a simple astrobiology course always optional. Besides it would be very difficult to find such a job here in my country.

We are accustomed to seeing animals in environments such as rivers, forests or even in the backyard of our house. However, there are species of animals that live in extreme environments. This incredible adaptation was due both to evolution and to the ability to use many things in these environments in their favor. These incredible animals are called extremophiles, that is, organisms capable of living in extreme environments. These organisms are very peculiar both in their form and in their power of adaptation and survival.
The origin of these animals is confused, in part, with the origin of the Earth itself. One of the most widely held hypotheses is that life on Earth has sprung up around hydrothermal vents on ocean floors. Extremophiles exist in a variety of ways, being they can be prokaryotes (beings made of simple cells) or eukaryotes (beings with complex cells), besides being unicellular (contains only one cell) or multicellular (contains several cells).
There are at least five main types of extremophilia:
Adaptation in saline environments: halophiles;
Adaptation to elevated temperatures: thermophilic and hyperthermophilic;
Adaptation at very low temperatures: psychrophiles;
Adaptation to pH extremes: acidophilic and alkaliphilic;
Adaptation to high levels of radiation: radioresistant microorganisms.
The term extremophile was first used in 1974 by MacElroy. He used the term when referring to extreme environments whose characteristics would exclude the vast majority of life species known on the planet. The mild environments, which house much of the Earth's life quantity, are those with a temperature of up to 40 degrees, pH values close to neutrality, relative salinity of the oceans, atmospheric pressure and radiation similar to the earth's surface under normal conditions. Apart from this, only organisms such as very efficient adaptation managed to survive in environments outside of such characteristics.
Extremophiles are extensively studied in astrobiology, which is a branch of astronomy that aims to understand the origins of life on Earth and how life could adapt on other planets and moons. These animals live in very similar environmental conditions to those found elsewhere in the cosmos and some behave very much like the first types of life on our planet.

In Spain there is an important center for Astrobiology (CAB, http://www.cab.inta.es). I usually visit with my students. I know scientists who work there. Many times they collaborate in our projects.
