Harry S. Truman was the 33rd president of the United States. He was born in Missouri and is the son of a farmer and mule trader. Harry had a modest upbringing and worked as a timekeeper for a railroad construction company, as a bookkeeper a farmer and a captain in world war one, he did all of this before getting into politics. He was originally the vice president of Franklin Roosevelt but came to power when Franklin died of a stroke. He dropped the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki within his first few months in office. These events are what he is most historically known for and if this action was ethical, deserved or neccessary is still talked about today.

Roughly 185 000 Japanese people died as a result of this war ending act. Most of these people were killed almost instantly. These bombs killed others later because of the cancer some individuals got because of the radiation in the area. Many innocent civilians were killed in this event making it hard to justify. Their is a difference between killing civilians and members of the military.

Not guilty

The biggest reason that Harry Truman can be seen as not guilty comes from understanding Japan's military's mindset. They would not give up until they had no other choice. They had such a sense of national pride that they would easily lay down their lives for their country. Accepting defeat was not an option and was viewed as disgracing their ancestors. Because of these beliefs the war in the pacific seemed to have no foreseeable end without the use of the A bombs. As they say hindsight is 20/20. Viewed from Harry's eyes he saved lives. He figured that if the war had gone on more americans lives would have been lost and more Japanese lives would have ultimately have been lost as well. It was the solution to finding a quick way to end the war. It is undeniable that Harry Truman made this happen and it is undeniable that he killed many innocents the only case that can be made for his innocence is that he did this for the greater good.

Not Guilty of Putting Japanese americans into labour camps

He definitely did put Japanese into labour camps but it is arguable that this was justifiable. Afterall the Japanese were the enemy. Through his eyes he was insuring the safety of the rest of the american citizens and made use of able bodies. Most likely the vast majority of these japanese people were not going to try to join the Japanese army or try to ruin america from the inside out but Harry Truman didn't want to take any risks. The fact that many of these Japanese were US veterans or proud to be american made this look very bad. Truman can be excused from this crime because it happened while Franklin Roosevelt was in power.

When these Japanese were rounded up and put into internment camps they lost a lot. Many of these people were business owners. Japanese owned restaurants were robbed and their farms were sold by the government. They treated their property as if it was the governments. Everything these people had worked for had been wiped away. The US government payed nothing the the Japanese after the war and they had to start from the bottom once again.
