They inject their genetic material right into the cell and take over. They then use the cell to make more viruses and take over more cells.<br><br><strong>Are viruses alive?</strong><br><br>Scientists differ on whether viruses are actually alive or not. Many people say they are non-living because they cannot reproduce without the aid of a host. Viruses also do not metabolize food into energy or have organized cells, which are usually characteristics of living things.<br><br><strong>Characteristics of Viruses</strong></p><ul><li><p>They do not have an organized cell structure.</p></li><li><p>They have no cell nucleus.</p></li><li><p>They typically have one or two strands of DNA or RNA.</p></li><li><p>They are covered with a protective coat of protein called the CAPSID.</p></li><li><p>They are inactive when not inside a living cell, but are active when inside another living cell.</p></li></ul><p><strong>Why are viruses bad?</strong><br><br>When viruses invade a body's cells and begin to multiply, they make the host sick. Viruses can cause all sorts of diseases.<br><br></p><p><strong>How do viruses spread?</strong><br><br>Viruses are very small and lightweight. They can float through the air, survive in water, or even on the surface of your skin. Viruses can be passed from one person to another by shaking hands, touching food, through water, or through the air when a person coughs or sneezes.<br><br>Viruses can also be passed on by insect bites, animals, or through bad food.<br><br><strong>Examples of Viruses</strong><br><br>There are many viruses that can infect people and make them sick. One of the most common is influenza which causes people to get the flu. Other diseases caused by viruses include the common cold, measles, mumps, yellow fever, and hepatitis.<br><br><strong>How to Avoid Getting Infected</strong><br><br>There are things you can do to help reduce your chance of getting infected by a virus. Here are a few examples:</p><ul><li><p>Wash your hands (probably one of the most important ones).</p></li><li><p>Don't put your hands or fingers in your mouth, nose, or eyes. Rubbing your nose or eyes can cause a virus on your hands to infect your body.</p></li><li><p>Make sure your food is well-cooked, especially meat.</p></li><li><p>Take your vitamins each day.</p></li><li><p>Get plenty of sleep and exercise. This helps to strengthen your immune system to fight off viruses.</p></li></ul><p><strong>How are viruses treated?</strong><br><br>There is little that doctors can do to treat viruses. In most cases our body's immune system fights off the virus. Scientists have developed vaccines that help our bodies to build up immunity to a specific virus. One example of a vaccine is the flu shot. The flu shot helps the body to develop its own defenses against the flu called antibodies. <br><br></p><p><strong>Interesting Facts about Viruses</strong></p><ul><li><p>Viruses are not classified in any of the five kingdoms of living things. Some bacteria are used to make medicines and vaccines.</p><p>But bacteria can cause trouble too, as with cavities, <a rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://kidshealth.org/en/teens/uti.html"><strong>urinary tract infections</strong></a>, <a rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://kidshealth.org/en/teens/swimmers-ear.html"><strong>ear infections</strong></a>, or <a rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://kidshealth.org/en/teens/strep-throat.html"><strong>strep throat</strong></a>. Antibiotics are used to treat bacterial infections.</p><p><strong>Viruses</strong></p><p>Viruses are even smaller than bacteria. They aren't even a full cell. They are simply genetic material (DNA or RNA) packaged inside of a protein coating. They need to use another cell's structures to reproduce, which means they can't survive unless they're living inside something else (such as a person, animal, or plant).</p><p>Viruses can only live for a very short time outside other living cells. For example, viruses in infected body fluids left on surfaces like a countertop or toilet seat can live there for a short time, but quickly die unless a live host comes along.</p><p>Once they've moved into someone's body, though, viruses spread easily and can make a person sick. Viruses are responsible for some minor sicknesses like <a rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://kidshealth.org/en/teens/colds.html"><strong>colds</strong></a>, common illnesses like the <a rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://kidshealth.org/en/teens/fight-flu.html"><strong>flu</strong></a>, and very serious diseases like smallpox or <a rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://kidshealth.org/en/teens/std-hiv.html"><strong>HIV/AIDS</strong></a>.</p><p>Antibiotics are not effective against viruses. Antiviral medicines have been developed against a small, select group of viruses.</p><p><strong>Fungi</strong></p><p>Fungi (pronounced: FUN-guy) are multicelled, plant-like organisms. A fungus gets nutrition from plants, food, and animals in damp, warm environments.</p><p>Many fungal infections, such as <a rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://kidshealth.org/en/teens/athletes-foot.html"><strong>athlete's foot</strong></a> and <a rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://kidshealth.org/en/teens/yeast-infections.html"><strong>yeast infections</strong></a>, are not dangerous in a healthy person. People who have weakened <a rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://kidshealth.org/en/teens/immune.html"><strong>immune systems</strong></a> (from diseases like HIV or cancer), though, may develop more serious fungal infections.</p><p><strong>Protozoa</strong></p><p>Protozoa (pronounced: pro-toe-ZO-uh) are one-celled organisms, like bacteria. But they are bigger than bacteria and contain a nucleus and other cell structures, making them more similar to plant and animal cells.</p><p>Protozoa love moisture, so intestinal infections and other diseases they cause, such as amebiasis and giardiasis, often spread through contaminated water. Some protozoa are parasites, which means that they need to live on or in another organism (like an animal or plant) to survive. For example, the protozoa that causes malaria grows inside red blood cells, eventually destroying them. Some protozoa are encapsulated in cysts, which help them live outside the human body and in harsh environments for long periods of time.</p><p><strong>Medically</strong></p>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>In the case of bacteriophages, the new virions are usually released by bursting the host cell—a process called lysing, which kills the cell. Sometimes, however, bacteriophages form a stable association with the host cell. The virus’s genes are incorporated into the host cell’s genes, replicate as the cell’s genes replicate, and when the cell divides, the viral genes are passed on to the two new cells. Its genes, however, are passed on to each new generation of cells that stem from the original host cell. These cells remain healthy and continue to grow unless, as happens occasionally, something triggers the latent viral genes to become active. When this happens, the normal cycle of viral infection results: the viral genes direct viral replication, the host cell bursts, and the new virions are released. This pattern of infection is called lysogeny.</p><p>Closely related to lysogeny is the process known as transduction, whereby a virus carries bacterial genes from one host to another. This transduction process occurs when genes from the original host become incorporated into a virion that subsequently infects another bacterium.</p><p>Viral infections of plant and animal cells resemble those of bacterial cells in many ways. The release of new virions from plant and animal cells does not, however, always involve the bursting of the host cell as it does in bacteria. Particularly among animal viruses, the new virions may be released by budding off from the cell membrane, a process that does not necessarily kill the host cell.</p><p>In general, a viral infection produces one of four effects in a plant or animal cell: inapparent effect, in which the virus remains dormant in the host cell; cytopathic effect, in which the cell dies; hyperplastic effect, in which the cell is stimulated to divide before its death; and cell transformation, in which the cell is stimulated to divide, take on abnormal growth patterns, and become cancerous (see <a rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" class="reflink" href="https://kids.britannica.com/students/article/cancer/273482">Cancer</a>).</p><p>Viral infections in animals can be localized or can spread to various parts of the body. Some animal viruses produce latent infections: the virus remains dormant much of the time but becomes active periodically. In fact, the chitin that makes up fungal cell walls is also found in insect exoskeletons.<br>&nbsp;</p><p><strong>How many fungi are there?</strong></p><p>There are roughly 200,000 known species of fungi across the globe, with roughly 15,000 found within the UK. Currently, scientists estimate that there could be&nbsp;another 2 million species of fungus yet to be discovered.<br>&nbsp;</p><p><strong>People have been using fungi for over 5000 years</strong></p><p>Otzi the Iceman was discovered with two species of fungus in his pocket. The birch polypore (a white bracket fungus) found in his pocket may have acted as a natural laxative and antibiotic. Scientists think Otzi may have been self-medicating to treat gut parasites, or he was using the fungal skin as an antiseptic plaster to protect wounds.<br><br>We still use fungi in medicine today, including penicillin, an antibiotic originally manufactured from a penicillium mould.<br><br>Different species of fungi are being investigated to see if their presence can improve our gardens.          <description><![CDATA[<p>A virus is a small piece of genetic information in a “carrying case” — a protective coating called a capsid. Viruses aren’t made up of cells, so they don’t have all the equipment that cells do to make more copies of themselves. Instead, they carry instructions with them and use a host cell’s equipment to make more copies of the virus.</p><p>It’s like someone breaking into your house to use your kitchen. The virus brought its own recipe, but it needs to use your dishes, measuring cups, mixer and oven to make it. (Unfortunately, they usually leave a big mess when you finally kick them out.)</p><p>Viruses are also sometimes called “virions.”</p><p><strong>Virus features</strong></p><p>Viruses share some common features.
