Living in America states people travel to America to find work, so they can earn enough money to achieve their American Dream, to be free from poverty and make better life for them and their families.  The song describes a land where “dreams can all come true”.  America is a place where people can become “anything you want to be” and “just be proud and shout it loud”.  America is equal and just a place to live.  The lines embody hope and optimism that have drawn people from all corners of the world to America in search of a better life.

It is a difficult dream for the European upper classes to interpret adequately, and too many of us ourselves have grown weary and mistrustful of it. It is not a dream of motor cars and high wages merely, but a dream of social order in which each man and each woman shall be able to attain to the fullest stature of which they are innately capable, and be recognized by others for what they are, regardless of the fortuitous circumstances of birth or position."  The phrase means that in the eyes of the American Dream everyone is equal in America no matter what social class and gender you're in. Anyone can go from rags to riches in America and everyone has that opportunity. The phrase also states that America is an opportunity for a better life depending on your abilities or achievements. She closes her eyes, remembering her first trip to the beach with Papi, and how tightly he held her hand as they walked into the ocean together.
