The “Miracle on Ice competition” was more than just an Olympic upset, to many Americans, it was an ideological victory in the cold war. On September 5th, 1972, one of the most horrific moments in Olympics history took place. 8 Palestinian terrorists, a group belonging to a group named the Black September Organization broke into the Olympic village and took 11 Israeli athletes hostage. Almost immediately, 2 were killed. The hostage standoff lasted 18+ hours. A German rescue effort failed and the remaining hostages but 3 were killed. After this 2 of the 3 hostages were killed by Israeli Mossad. The boycott was to not participate in the games or to move them to a different location. The games were still played in Moscow. Some nations that didn’t participate were South Korea, Haiti, and Chile. Though the boycott was in support of Afghanistan against the Soviets, Afghanistan still sent 11 athletes to participate in the events.

Last, the Olympics created competition through bigger insentive to win. The Olympics caused invasions and killing.
