We managed to come up with a C++ code that shows us the stack at each individual step, based on data introduced from the keyboard.
In order to make things easier, we made a convention using binary numbers, so that "1" represents the coins with the black side facing up, and "0" the ones with the red side facing up.

My team and I (Maria) managed to find the rule by which we should turn the coins over so we'll obtain 0000..... or 1111.....
We are now trying to find a new rule by which to number how many moves we have to make. We think that we might obtain the answer by using the number of "changes" a stack has.
If the stack looks like 101001, it has four changes, after the first coin, the second one, the third one, and before the last one: 1 0 1 00 1.
That's all for now, I think that we could do with some help, if you got other ideas. <3

Hi Im Gabriel, Im in 10th grade so 16 years old and im in the VDD highschool ( val de durance) with a bunch of people in here.
I was lucky enough to go to romania, so i got to work with differents schools, which is in my opinion the most intresting feature in this project apart from pure reaserch : work in groups and collaborate to resolve a compex subject
I hope to see everyone that hasnt been in romania. As izmael said, it's always better to work together while seeing each other.

We successfully converted the C++ program into python, which is a language we are more familiar with in our school. We then wrote an other code to simule large numbers of positions and to gather data.

After listening to your solutions, we discovered that my team and I solved a different question than you. We considered that we are not allowed to flip only one coin at a time. We solved it being allowed to turn over at least two coins together. This is why our solution may look a bit more complex than yours! We promise that until next time we will write down both the solution for the common question and the solution for the modified problem, because we think that it would still be interesting to study this case too. We can't wait to talk to you again!

We succeded in creating a C++ program which allows us to see every step of the algorithm, meaning it shows the stack after each switch, until it is left with only 1 sided coins. Moreover, we started writing our article.

hey guys! how’s everyone? :)
we just wanted to give you a little update and maybe some ideas.
We are almost done writing our article.
We also talked to Mr. Țurcaș and asked him how to proceed with the problem, so maybe calculating the average of moves in relation to the number of coins using other methods (except the (a+b)/2 formula) would (hopefully) give the same results and we can figure out some other stuff from there.
Do you have some other ideas?

We have just finished our article and now we are wondering what other questions we can try to answer, related to our problem, of course! If you have any suggestions feel free to tell us!
We thought that maybe we could try to find out if there are any other ways of making the stack have only one sided coins. We would also like to do something including probabilities, but we are not sure what yet.

In the input we put the number of coins and then 1 to represent the black side of the coin and 0 for the white side. In the output we will see the initial stack made out of black circles for 1 and white circles for 0. We will also see the steps, the final stack and the total number of moves. Here is a printscreen.
