While I have an obvious childhood love for Disney, Webkinz, Build a Bear or Junie B. Jones. I will never forget my Polly Pockets. When I was little, Polly Pockets were my whole world, I swear. I took them everywhere, even if it was just a few in my pocket to the store, and was always losing the tiny rubber shoes. I probably had the whole collection, but the Cruise Ship was my favorite. Looking at how it shaped me, I would probably say that it taught me responsibility, since there were so many little pieces that I did not wanna lose, sharing, due to having a younger sister, and money management because I would save up that allowance money to get the bigger sets.

While it might seem silly, Orbeez were/are a huge thing to my sister and her friends. They are these tiny little balls that, when out in water, grow bigger to be soft and squishy. There are used to play with, calm and relax or my sister's favorite, squish them to pieces. They made mini Orbeez Spas, Art and Game Toys. Honestly, I have played with them a little bit myself and they are not half bad. It is really interesting to watch them get wet, grow, dry and shrink back down.

My Family Artifact

When looking at family artifacts and traditions, there are an endless number of possibilities because every family is different. Looking specifically at my family, I hold the family artifact of our tradition of the “fourteenth age” really close to home. In my family, on a child’s fourteenth birthday, they are considered to be “coming of age” and on “their way to adulthood”. So, that child receives a piece of jewelry, usually something that they would commonly wear, and a sweet poem/quote of encouragement to go with it. My parents take the whole family to dinner and it is a really big deal. For example, when I turned fourteen, I got a star ring and the quote “Reach for the Moon! Even if you miss, you will land among the stars.”. I was so excited when I got my ring and still wear it every day.

Poverty and Childhood

While there are a lot of different things that can factor in and effect childhood, I feel like poverty is a bigger one than most. All families have different incomes and struggles, where some children find themselves being jealous of what others have. Yet, this problem can be a lot deeper and serious than people often think. A family suffering from poverty, not only struggles financially, but will struggle health wise as well, such as education levels, malnutrition, dental/doctor checkups and other medical needs. These are very important, vital things that are needed to survive, but so many people are just going without them.
