From Understanding Language - Stanford, it was mentioned the teacher needs to have the standards in mind first before proceeding with the lesson plan. It also states that the standards should integrate the language objectives. These two should not be seen as separate checkpoints because, in order for the lesson to be successful, these two standards need to be met. From Colorin Colorado, it states that there are several strategies that can help ELL students. One would be communicating effectively without "dumbing down" the vocabulary. This can be done by speaking clearly and at an adequate pace, avoiding slang/idiomatic expressions, and creating a safe classroom. By creating a safe classroom, the student will feel encouraged to raise their hand if they do not understand a word/phrase without the fear of being picked on by their peers.
-Jackelline Rivera

Colorin Colorado mentions a visual thinking strategy which allows students to improve their comprehension. In this strategy teachers use an image related to the text to be read, students analyze the image and then discuss what they think the picture is about and what do they think is going on.Each student is to provide justification for what they are saying. The discussion continues and the teachers then summarizes what the students have said and end by reading the text related to the picture. The Language-Stanford and SIOP also provides various strategies. One that I liked was to provide opportunities for students to build on their background knowledge with each, but at the same time allows them to engage with complex texts. This includes allowing children to pair-share, participate in class and group discussions, do group work and presentations.

Colorin Colorado: Differentiation and use of multiple modalities. Students learn better when the material and assessment opportunities are presented in varying manners: writing, speaking, listening, drawing/doing. In order to differentiate effectively, the teacher must get to know as much as possible about each student. Differentiation can also be done with homework assignments, not just in the classroom.
Stanford: Peer Learning for ELLs is also a great strategy which helps students build confidence and allows students to use their peers as models. This helps build strong relationships among students of different background, therefore creating a diverse community within the classroom. Both students benefit from this strategy/technique because they both get to practice their language in a low-stress setting.

There are many ELL strategies. One of my favorites being "El Dictado" in which a teacher essentially dictates a sentence and has the students write what they hear. This is a phenomenal way to have children learn! In addition, the graphic organizers introduced to us by Colorin Colorado which allows for students to better make connections to other things they've previously learned.

One strategy that I consider to be important is the use of graphic organizers presented in Colorin Colorado. They provide extra support to guide students thought process.
Stanford: Role-playing is a very useful strategy for providing opportunities for students to collaborate.

There were so many strategies we learned about during the semester that I hope to incorporate in my future classroom. I really like the use of "El Dictado" and Así Se Dice" that we looked at earlier in the semester. I also found the graphic organizers presented from Colorin Colorado to be a great way to help students organize and comprehend concepts or vocabulary being covered in class. The use of language or sentence frames is something I hope to include in my teaching as well because I find it to be a great tool in helping emergent bilinguals and ELLs as they strengthen their writing skills.

There are so many great ELL strategies but the one that I really like was the one used in " El Dictado". It provides the students to hear it in the two languages at the same time for them to comprehend it. I also think the graphic organizers presented from Coloring Colorado is a good way to help students comprehend what they are learning and allows them to make connections to their prior knowledge.
