While teaching Science, I like to use a lot of KWL charts because I think it's a great thing to keep going back to as we learn the information. I also use weather charts to show visuals for each day, teaching vocabulary like windy, rainy, snowy and then teaching temperatures.

When teaching, I like to motivate students by watching a video of what students are learning, I then will use a KWL, or a Question and Answer Chart for before reading. During reading, I have students use a main idea table or write 4 important facts. At the end of reading, I have students Sum it up or use a Venn Diagram.

When planning, I use the question and answer chart before reading. I find that students are then looking for the answers to their questions as they read. I also really enjoy using the information pyramid after reading. Students enjoy getting creative and summing up what they learned. My goal is to make content engaging and meaningful for the students. When planning I strive to think about how what is being read/taught connects to my students lives.

I often pre-teach vocabulary and concepts and use a lot of examples and movement to accompany them. I find this helps the students better when they are asked to apply the information. In first grade, I ask a lot of questions to help build background knowledge and get the students thinking about the topic and how it can connect to them. We also use KWL or anticipation guides.

When I'm tutoring I ask for the students new chapter ahead before we meet so I can pre screen the content. Then I will try to predict what will be important, what each student will most likely struggle in, and come prepared with how I need to personalize their lesson. I've found that depending on the date of the book being published a good amount of information is out of date or missing which causes most of my students' confusion when coming to me after they've had their class.

I have used KWL charts before and after reading. I have also used question and answer charts. During reading we have used concept maps for vocabulary words. We place the vocabulary word in the center and come up with synonyms for the vocabulary word. I have also used Exit Tickets at the end of lessons.

When working with a text, I always pre-teach vocabulary and have students take a picture walk, then discuss what we have found out from the pictures with partners and then in the whole group. I would like to incorporate more graphic organizers, including KWL charts, as my students begin reading more complex texts.
