The story opens with a description of Liz's papa: ''a red-haired, unshaven, untidy man sat in a rocking chair by a window.'' O. Henry found these details so important that he refers to them multiple times, and never calls the man by name. 

Something that becomes known is that at the end of the story after Lizzie has died. In many ways by placing the focus on Lizzie’s father Henry plays the role of responsibility.
