Pastor Cheng is a man of great kindness and generosity who carried out his responsibilities with passion, energy and a sense of humour! Meals and gatherings were never dull when Ps Cheng was present.

But he was also a man of prayer. He was serious about his faith and the gospel. I was always struck by how deeply he cared for his sheeps - both for their personal and ministry well-being and often told me that is okay to say no. He poured so much into the lives of so many young people, including my life.

"Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord.....” (Revelation 14:13)

Thank you, Pastor Cheng, for everything you have showed us and everything that you have taught us.

Delaying this matter further will mean more struggle and heartaches. We (Belinda and I, Frank) have been deliberating on what to share regarding our beloved late Pastor David Cheng. The truth is, it had been very hard for the both of us to want to recall our memories about Ps Cheng , because every time we think of him , our eyes cannot help swelling up with tears.

As we recall, the privilege we had, over the years, partnering along-side Pastor David Cheng whom we fondly called Lip Kiong, somehow causes deep emotional stirrings. The Mandarin congregation missed his very anointed worship especially the Worship team. Pastor Cheng had devoted much of his time, efforts and his gifting in helping to keep both the English and Mandarin Worship Ministry very much alive and still pursuing excellence in line and tune to the pleasure and acceptance of God. This is one very distinct legacy Pastor Lip Kiong had left and now often being mentioned among those brothers and sisters in EBC who expressed their heartfelt loss.

As a pastor, Belinda and I found him to have lived worthy of the calling he had received from the Lord. Ps. Lip Kiong was very helpful in many ways to those around him, sensitive and showing sympathy to friends and strangers regardless. We remembered on this occasion when we had the opportunity to help a family in distress. Both husband and wife who were Chinese converts were jobless and the husband walked into EBC and asked for help. The husband was without a job, the wife had just delivered a new born baby few months ago (both mother and girl were sickly). To cut the long story short, Ps. Cheng, together with us, did not hesitate to extend his love and care. We could still remember the joy and satisfaction that Ps. Cheng had when he was able to be a channel of blessings to this family. We are sure, there are many others out there, who have been blessed by his loving pastoral care too.

Even as we are writing this, Belinda reminded me that, many years ago, the teachers in her school were very impressed by Ps Cheng’s friendliness as he regularly, faithfully, waited for his dear wife, sister Lee Na’s school to be over, to help her carry her bags and belongings. Most of them commented that he’s an amazing example of a very caring and loving husband.

On top of all these, Ps Cheng had also been a father who had nurtured and brought up his children with the training and instruction of the Lord which we can evidently see in the characters of Ivan, Anders and Lavender. Let us consistently remember to pray for sister Lee Na and her children, that God’s presence will continue to bring much love, comfort and strength as they move through this tough time, into another future season of their lives.

Much as we all miss him, we are still thankful to God for Ps Cheng’s life, who had been a beacon of life and hope to many. Taking Ps Cheng as a God given example, with the legacy left by him, our prayers is that may we all continue to stand strong and zealous, with unwavering faith in God, bringing that eternal hope through our Lord Jesus Christ, to the people and communities around us.

In forever loving memories,
Pastor Frank & Belinda
(Pastors of Emmanuel Baptist Church - Mandarin Service)

Remembering Pastor David Cheng Lip Kiong

A year has passed and I still find it difficult to bring myself to adequately describe in words the sudden departure of a dear brother and fellow pastor in the ministry. Pastor Cheng was a brother, a friend, and a fellow soldier in the ministry.

Our relationship went back many years to the time when I was just starting out as a young pastor. Pastor Cheng whom we fondly called Lip Kiong came to know Christ in EBC Youth Fellowship. My wife Irene and I, had the privilege to disciple and journey with him through the different seasons of his life - his student days, as a working adult, his marriage, to ministering together as a team in the church. It was indeed a joy to see the grace of God transforming him from a challenging upbringing to become an able and recognized minster of the Gospel, loved and accepted by the pastors in the city.

We travelled together on many local and overseas trips for ministry, training and missions. One of the earliest ministry trips was driving with him to Sri Aman to speak in a SU (Scripture Union) student camp. He was serving in SU as a full time staff at that time. A memorable trip was going to Argentina to attend the revival gatherings there. One evening after a meeting it was quite late at night and we were hungry, I casually said, "how nice it would be if we could get some Malaysian food", and he replied, "no problem" and "magically" produced a packet of Maggi Mee 😊. How we were able to get it cooked was another interesting story. Yes he had a sense of humour. Fun aside, we did have a marvelous and enriching Holy Spirit experience in Argentina.

Pastor Cheng was a talented musician and an anointed worship leader. His gifting greatly complemented my teaching ministry in church. Flowing together in the Spirit during that season of Holy Spirit renewal in EBC was indeed one of the high points in our partnership. The songs that he had composed and recorded will be an inspiration and a legacy for the next generation.

As a pastor and friend, Pastor Cheng was loyal, trustworthy and faithful through the trials, the highs, the lows and the battles that we fought together. He was honest with his feelings and opinions even if we didn't see eye to eye on an issue. I knew he had my back and would hold the fort when I had to be away.

He loved his family and his church family. Connecting and reaching out to members and people was one of his strengths. He was instrumental in opening the door for some of the foreign pastors to minister in Kuching. Also, as a leader, he was able to disciple and raise a committed group of young people who continue to serve faithfully in EBC. It was his desire and vision to raise and see the next generation rising up to the call of God.

EBC is blessed to have Pastor Cheng who was committed to his calling and was dedicated to completing the assignments which God had given him.

"I tell you the truth, unless a kernel of wheat is planted in the soil and dies, it remains alone. But its death will produce many new kernels—a plentiful harvest of new lives". (John 12:24)

Much Love,
Pastor David Kueh and Irene
(Senior Pastor of Emmanuel Baptist Church)

My tribute to the late Pastor David Cheng Lip Kiong and his song Over All

Ps David Cheng will be dearly missed with his amazing gifting in worship and heart for the Lord, His church and for the lost.

It saddened us and I'm sure our Christian community was shaken. But I felt that his passing on was not in vain - that this painful incident was needed for a greater purpose in the Kingdom of God, especially in our rainbow nation Malaysia. His church members also felt the same purpose in all this pain.

“Most assuredly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the ground and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it produces much grain.”
John 12:24 NKJV

Ps David may not be familiar to many of us in Malaysia. But with his victory over death, this grain of wheat will multiply to greater things ahead especially upon his 3 children and wife and church and the believers of Malaysia and the nations.

On the day he passed on, his song, Over All, that was released in his debut album in 2011, rang in my mind over and over again with his voice and anointing upon the words proclaiming that indeed our Lord is the Ruler over all. "I will life up my eyes to Almighty God. And behold His dominion over all.... I will lift up my heart to trust in Him. For I know I cannot stand alone...." We choose to lift up our eyes in this painful moment. And behold His dominion over all.... We will lift up our hearts to trust in Him, we can't stand alone...

We MUST come in unity and ONENESS of heart of this global crisis. As you listen to this song Over All, may your ears be opened to Ps David Cheng's cheering over us from the cloud of witness (Hebrews 12:1). Let us leave our differences, and offenses and other things that easily ensnares us. Let us run the race that Ps David has started, and keep our eyes fixed on the Ruler over all so that our life will be in Him is secured; so that our faith will rise above the fear of the pestilence; so that our Lord will shine brighter within us.

From: Judith Yun (Penang)

All of us unanimously agree that our dear late Ps Cheng deserves this honoured commendation from the Lord.
We used to see him at almost anytime of the day whenever we dropped in to EBC church either for official or courtesy visit. Making sure that everything ran smoothly and orderly, Ps Cheng was indeed a good servant of the Lord. Sometimes I wondered whether he ever stopped to rest. The only time I know that he took a break was a very short trip to Kuala Lumpur to celebrate his dear wife, Lee Na's retirement, and even that too, his heart was thinking about the house of God and he had to rush back to see to events and meetings planned. The Lord also blessed him with the Jerusalem trip which was more like a working assignment. I honestly can't remember him having long breaks to rest. He was truly a shepherd with a servant heart; helpful, responsible, dependable, caring, faithful, sincere and undeniably talented.

He was always the last person to leave the church, making sure that the house of God was in order before he left. He would always be the 1st person at prayer meetings and would faithfully conduct these prayer meetings even though sometimes only a few persons turned up. He never stopped worshipping the Lord. Even in his discomfort of a bad cold or cough or running a fever, he still lead worship as nothing could stop him from his desire to seek and worship the Lord. That was the depth of his passion for God.

Ps Cheng's sudden absence has caused a huge vacuum in our beloved church. Although
"crippled" by his absence in one way or another, we know that he has left behind a strong legacy in the worship ministry and we will continue to look up to the Lord for the direction of this ministry and only God alone can bring total healing and restoration in His time. Ps Cheng is deeply missed by all of us and definitely will not be forgotten. It was an honour to have served with him in God's ministry.

- Woo Mei Queen -

I remember always being greeted by him with a happy and friendly voice wherever and whenever we met! He was also multi-talented – composed many songs that minister to various purposes and needs, had a beautiful and authoritative worship voice, dramatic talents, and a great sense of humour!

It has been a year since Pastor Cheng had gone ahead of us to be with the Lord Jesus.

I was a youth when I joined EBC and Pastor Cheng was the associate pastor then. Given our age gap, it took some time to get to understand each other e.g. our youth choices of praise and worship songs whenever we served for the Sunday worship service.

As the years went by though, I learnt over the years how much sacrifices you made to make EBC what it today: an oasis of the presence of God. A faithful man of God, a loving husband to Aunt Lina who complemented you perfectly and a father to 3 wonderful children.

I will miss your hearty laugh and your hilarious anecdotes from the pulpit. Until we meet again in heaven, Pastor Cheng...

Samuel Wong

Few months before you passed on, your go-to song was "Goodness of God" and for weeks, you kept singing it during Sunday service and on Friday CGs. There I was thinking "this song AGAIN?! Pastor really loves this song omg".

But now, listening to this song just hit different. Memories of you leading this song are still vivid. Indeed, you've worshipped God so gracefully with your life. The legacy that you've left shone so brightly even after you've passed. I'll always miss your jokes about your missing hair and your random remarks in Hokkien when there's silence in the congregation.

I have been given a difficult name to pronounce but the first few times we met, you'd always try to pronounce my name properly till you perfect it. You really were the good shepherd who called me by name and remembered me.

Two weeks of not coming to Sunday service, you'll drop me a "Is everything okay?" message of which you always reply with just an "Ok" after I explain my absence. On NYE of 2020, while you joined the youths at Kosa Coffee for countdown, you remembered me and texted me to tell me your $1.30 (Kosa in Hokkien) joke.

I miss you.

Thank you for thinking of Jeremy and I when there are occasions for food. Thank you for sharing your durians with me. Thank you for being such a good, good pastor. I am truly blessed and impacted by you in this mere four years of knowing you.

Tieng (EBC Kuching)

I remember I learnt a song in my teenage years for choir which is from the musical “Rent” entitled Seasons of Love.

Years back when my brother and I where in secondary school, our mum was admitted in the hospital. We were unsure and in shock. That was when my brother decided to seek you. Back then, we had only went for service once that month and were still teenagers. Despite that, you still opened your arms to us and you brought us to E.P.I.C. youth.

Years later, we grew to become children of God and grew intimately with God. That little gesture planted seeds in us and we grew to become who we are in Christ today. You and Aunty Lee Na have helped my family and I so much, and even gave me directions for my education overseas. Before I left Kuching, you made sure my spiritual growth was not compromised. You shared with me names of churches I could visit. And every time I was back in Kuching, you would ask how am I doing in church, how am I with studies or work.

The seeds you planted grew and bore good fruit. It was not sown in vain. I am forever grateful to you and your family for our relationship. You love your family without a doubt and nursed them with love and prayers. Because of that, I got to grow so much with Lavender and became the best of friends with her.

You have always been more than a Pastor, you were a friend, a Father figure to my family and to countless others. You are a true blessing.

-Janice Teo-

He was a great leader, great musician and a great man of God. He was so talented. We miss the time when he lead worship in church with his guitar, always bring joy and fun in praise and worship. We love his spontaneous singing in the middle of his sermons or sharings. Not forgetting also his Hokkien lame jokes when he was preaching. He always encouraged us young adults to rise up and get involved in ministry and pray for others. We miss him so much.

~A Tribute To Ps David Cheng Lip Kiong From The Lim Family - Johnny, Jane & Jordan~

17 March 2020-17 March 2021. It has exactly been one year.

In remembering our dear late Ps Cheng, we would like to dedicate this tribute to Ps Cheng together as a family.

Needless to say, Ps Cheng has done much for us individually and as a family over the years. Out of the many memorable things, we would like to especially highlight one significant occasion.

That one significant occasion was when Ps Cheng personally passed down his worship anointing to Jordan during a combined Care Group meeting between Family Care Group and E.P.I.C. Youth way back in 2011.

We remember vividly that special moment when Ps Cheng laid hands on Jordan and prophesied over him, declaring that he will become a worship leader and lead people to God with his gifting in leading worship and playing the guitar.

Since then, Ps Cheng has been instrumental in grooming Jordan to play the guitar and Jordan backed up Ps Cheng in every Friday's Care Group worship session without fail.

Ministry wise, Ps Cheng's vision to see the young people from the English Sunday Service rise up came to pass when E.P.I.C Youth was birthed in 2010. His joy was seeing the Youth growing in the Lord and seeing them serve in church, notably in the worship ministry. Johnny and I were, and we still are, blessed to have been involved in this ministry, to serve alongside Ps Cheng in discipling the Youth and overseeing the growth of the E.P.I.C. Youth ministry all these years.

E.P.I.C. Youth is what it is today because it was genuinely a labour of love.

We believe there was really nothing that Ps Cheng had done and/or accomplished during his lifetime that were futile. He evidently poured his heart and soul into everything and into his multiple ministries. And the church has, and is, seeing the fruitful results and bearing testimonies of his labour of love.

"That is your legacy on this Earth when you leave this Earth: how many hearts you touched." Patti Davis

Truly, Ps Cheng's legacy lives on and we thank the Lord for his life, his dedication, his faithfulness, his ministry and his service to God, to EBC, to His people and to his own beloved family (Lee Na, Ivan, Anders and Lavender) ❤️

Dear Pastor Cheng,

I still find it very difficult to express my feelings in a way that feels both real and honest. Every time I hear your name being mentioned and your songs played, tears start to roll down my cheeks. I cannot help but to reminisce the days when you were once around. I am glad to have shared many beautiful (and super funny) memories with you. Thank you for making every cell meeting fun and less awkward by simply being you.

When I became a youth leader and slowly got involved in other ministries, you always made sure that I received sufficient guidance, support and help, and making sure that I wasn't overwhelmed. You have always believed in me and have always believed in passing the baton to the next generation. Thank you for investing into our lives. We are eternally grateful for you.

Thank you for all the times you (and Aunty Lee Na) called just to check on me - I will definitely miss our casual conversations. You were always very intentional in getting to know the youths. Thank you also for opening up your house to the youths for lepak - I will miss seeing you sitting on your couch, holding your ipad/phone to reply messages, and then suddenly laughed at something you had read. Oftentimes, we do not get your jokes and why you find it so funny but your expression was just so priceless that we laughed at you instead Hahaha!

You were not just our Pastor. You were our spiritual father, a friend and a counselor. It is with no doubt that your passion and love for music and for God have impacted so many lives. Your faith and legacy will live on forever in our lives and in our hearts.

It was an honor to serve alongside you and to be under your leadership. I will definitely miss your church jokes and our makan session together after church.

You have fought the good fight and you have finished the race. I bet you are having the best time in Heaven, Pastor. Until we meet again…

Sonya

We honor and remember dearly Pastor Cheng as our first spiritual father. He patiently took us through our foundation classes in the early days of our walk with the Lord, usually followed by fellowship over coffee at the coffeeshop near our church. He was also our cell leader for several years in the Family Care Group and had impacted our lives greatly. We appreciate his prayers and encouragement for us and our family.
His songs continue to minister to us, and we do miss the times when he led worship in church. We thank God for putting us in EBC and connecting us to Pastor Cheng.
-Thomas and Siaw Hong-

He also cared for his cell group and the youth under him. There were many times when he would send me home after youth with his family. I really appreciated that. He was always joyful even when he was tired. I see the strength of his family and its encouraging. Thank you for all you did and for faithfully serving the Lord.

He gave me the opportunities for me and my team, where a small congregation of EBC English Kota Padawan to lead during mass event for example, in English Sunday Service, Christmas celebration, Easter Day and even church anniversary.

I truly appreciate the opportunities he gave us and taught me a lot in as a worship leader and leading a team. I learnt and grow a lot throughout the year and he has been my inspiration in worship.

Someday, if I wanted to give up on worship ministry I look back to Pastor Cheng for what he has done. If the Lord will, I want to continue his legacy and lead the young people to worship the Lord in spirit and in truth. I remember back then, he came for a while to church as I was practicing with my team and advice to change my key to higher key as he told me we want the congregation to sing together. I really appreciate his advised and will remember that always as I lead in worship.

I miss him about makan-makan too. Remember back then when we was given the opportunity to lead at English Sunday Service, right after the service the service he brought us makan-makan and ordered lots of food.

Pastor David Cheng has always been a friendly, gracious and warm person in our fellowship. Over the years, his faithfulness and generosity inspires us in KMF almost every week without fail. We have been so blessed each time, he picks up the guitar and lead us in a time of worship. His sudden demise shocked and saddened all of us. Indeed we lost a dear brother whom we cherished and can only take comfort that he is with his Savior and Lord now. We honor his memory and may we each live the life worthy of the One whom Pastor David Cheng serves wholeheartedly. May the Lord comfort Sis Lee Na, Ivan, Anders, Lavender and the EBC family in this time.

On behalf of the Kuching Ministers Fellowship,
Daron Tan

To Pastor Cheng, my brother in Christ who is gracious and unassuming.

My fondest memory of Pastor Cheng was those times of Holy Ghost laughter. He was like a barrel full of oil. Anywhere near him would make us break out into laughter. Ecclesiastes says "There is a a time for everything... " That was the time for Holy Ghost laughter. So much fun and joy. Pastor Cheng's heart was always for revival and presence of God. His songs were inspiring. One that I like most was REBUILD THE WALLS OF JERUSALEM taken from one of the Psalms (Psalm 122). Pastor Cheng, my beloved brother in Christ, will always be missed. But we know we'll see him again. Praise be to God!

- Ida Kueh -

One of his favorite songs was "when I look into holiness, I worship you, the reason I live is to worship you". I heard him singing that song in one of the class rooms in school when I was in Form 2 if I could recall correctly. That was the first time I knew Bro David Cheng .That was decades ago. Such an anointing that came from the class where Christian fellowship was held. Now that he behold His holiness, I could see him smiling and rejoicing before the Father that He love so much. Ps Cheng, ....you have have run the race. You have kept the faith. You end well. You life have impacted many of us. Thank you for showing us good example.

From David Branch

We believe he is now so blessed to rest from his labour, for his good deeds in the Lord will follow him (Rev 14:13).

I missed his joke about the HIV, "hair is vanishing". Selina loves to treat him with her "red bean soup" which he appreciated so much. Time with him always filled with fond memories of his humour and laughter. He is truly missed as a great friend and a ministry partner.

-Tony and Selina Tay-

We, from Good News Fellowship always have good working relationship with EBC. I remember, in the early 90’s we had a church camp and Ps David Cheng was one of the speakers on worship. We had a really good session and that has helped my journey as a worship leader and I am sure he had impacted many other people as well. The Lord has anointed him to be a very good song writer and his songs are still being sung by us till this day. Ps David, though you have left us, we will remember you as a kind man who love to worship.

Brian Lee

My faith was simple and pure and during that meeting while Pastor Cheng was leading worship and singing in the Spirit, l was so touched by the Spirit for the first time. God's Spirit led me to dance like a ballerina and my spirit was soaring above so freely. It was very enjoyable! l will always remember Pastor Cheng for his powerful worship especially this experience which changed my life and set me free from my burdens.

Mary Hiu, EBC Chinese Church
