He was in the oil business, and never patented his drilling processes. When Drake was drilling for oil, water kept flooding the hole. To fix this, he drove an iron pipe down to bedrock and put a drill in the pipe. This kept the water from entering the excavation shaft. He brought the steamboat to a commercial success from the experimental stage. He also invented a steam warship, and a submarine. His first steamboat engine had only 8 horse power and broke the hull of the ship. He later got a new hull and upgraded the engine to 24 horsepower. By 1810 three of Fulton's boats served the Hudson and Raritan rivers.
