Socrative is a cloud-based program that allows teachers to create quizzes that students can take on laptops, tablets or smartphones. Quizzes can be true/false, multiple choice, short answer, or open-ended short response. Teachers can pace these quiz activities for use during a classroom discussion or allow students to pace themselves in a quiz or ticket-out-the-door type format. There is also a gaming element in which teams of students can compete against each other to answer quiz questions.

The results of the quizzes can be displayed live, but anonymously, to allow the teacher to instantly assess student learning and make adjustments as necessary. The quizzes can also be shared with other teachers, thereby allowing teachers access to a plethora of resources that can be used or modified for future use.

According to Kahoot's website, “kahoots” are fun learning games. These games are designed by the teacher in the form of a series of questions on specific topics. Students use their devices (laptops, tablets, or smartphones) to log into the session using a pre-selected log-in code created by the teacher in order to answer questions in a real-time, social, and game-like learning environment. Students may use their real names or pseudonyms as directed by the instructor.

The most common type of Kahoot is the quiz. The teacher creates the multiple choice quiz, including the number of questions and time limit to answer each question. Students then answer in the allotted time, allowing the teacher to quickly and formatively assess student knowledge and adapt content as needed. Students earn points by answering questions quickly and correctly, and this enhances the engagement and motivation factors.

This tool can also be used to facilitate discussions. For instance, the teacher can pose a question with no right or wrong answer in order to assess opinions or understanding of a given topic. The collective results can be displayed and serve as the basis for directing the conversation towards a more in-depth comprehension of the topic. A video or picture can also be attached to the question.

Additionally, there is a survey option that can be utilized with this resource. The teacher can ask survey questions with no right or wrong answers, just like traditional surveys. These surveys can then be used to guide class conversations, and the survey results can be downloaded if necessary.

A backchannel is a conversation that takes place alongside an activity or event, like tweeting during a presentation in real time. However, Backchannel Chat is a web app that specifically provides teachers with a more controlled environment to moderate classroom discussions in real time, and this ensures that students do not have access to unapproved content. Teachers control all aspects of the discussion and can remove messages, prevent students from posting, and lock the room so that the instructor is the only one who can add content. This is especially helpful if the pace of the conversation becomes overwhelming and key messages are lost. This tool works great for simultaneously increasing classroom participation and informally assessing student knowledge.

Plickers is a response system that utilizes paper cards, which eliminates the need for student devices. On the website, the teacher sets up his/her class quizzes, adding questions, tracking questions, and assigning different questions to different classes as desired. Within the app, each student is assigned a number that corresponds with the plicker card that the teacher will give them, and the card is given a unique visual code. The code has four sides, each lettered A, B, C, D. During the quiz, the students holds the card so that their selected letter answer choice is at the top of the card. The teacher then uses the app on his/her smartphone to slowly scan the room. The app recognizes the cards and captures the answer that each student selects. Upon the completion of the quiz, the teacher receives a report summary of responses to all questions asked and can utilize the assessment data to modify future lesson strategies.

Quizalize is a web based quiz game platform that is similar to Kahoot. Like Kahoot, students play quiz games on their laptops or tablets by going to the Quizalize website and entering their names and a class code. Students are awarded points for correctly answering questions quickly. Students are given feedback instantly on every quiz question that they answer, and teachers can quickly assess for student understanding. A total score is presented to students at the end of every quiz. What's different about Quizalize is that teachers can have students play a quiz game as a classroom activity or assign to them to play at home. Either way, students receive immediate feedback and can track their own progress. Teachers also have access to student report data and can monitor student progress immediately and over time.

The advice column is a fun activity that can be used to allow students to practice a variety of integrated and high level skills. The teacher explains the concept of an advice column and assigns students to write a column giving their detailed advice on how to solve or address a specific problem. This can be used in every subject area or to address real-life classroom concerns, and can be modified as necessary for the topic to be discussed. The teacher could use this strictly as a formative assessment with a focus on comprehension, vocabulary, or subject knowledge. However, it can also be utilized as a pre- or post- assessment tool.
