Tom Buchanan is a sturdy and straw haired 30 year old man with arrogant eyes that establish dominance over his face and gave him an aggressive appearance. It I stated that he has an enormous body with a gruff husky tenor in his voice. Tom has an eternal contempt, which many people liked however there were many men who "hated his guts". The colors that are associated with Tom thought the chapter is the color red, which can be used to describe anger and aggression which fits with Tom due to his aggressive appearance. My overall opinion of Tom is that he is a strong character and always stands up for himself.

East and West Egg are opposites of each other with East egg being the more fashionable of the two. The characters that live in this side are the Tom Buchanans and Daisy. West egg was described as the less fashionable side. Nick resides in West Egg and describes his house as an eyesore, which was small and squeezed between two huge houses that rented for twelve to fifteen thousand a season, but Nick paid only $80 a month for his house. Across him Nick was Gatsby's mansion which had a tower on one side, under thin beard of raw ivory, and more than forty acres of lawn and garden. The Valley of Ashes is located about half way between West Egg and New York which is described as a dark land with ashes everywhere as in its name. Occasionally a line of gray cars crawls along, and gives out a ghastly creak. Above the land there is a giant billboard of Doctor T.J. Eckleburg which are blue and massive This is where Nick first meets Toms mistress. Tom and Nick first go to New York city with Mrs. Wilson and stay in an apartment at the top floor of the building, which is said to have a small living room, a small dining room, a small bedroom, and a bathroom. When in the apartment, Myrtle invites her sister Catherine to come over as well as Mr. and Mrs. McKee

Jordan’s take on car accidents is she’s very careless and does not worry much about the way she drives. For example, at the end of chapter three, Nick and Jordan are talking and he says “You’re a rotten driver, Either you ought to be more careful, or you oughtn’t to drive at all”, Jordan says “I am careful” and Nick responds with “no you’re not”, “Well, other people are, They’ll keep out of my way, it takes two to make an accident”. This quote shows that Jordan is not worried about the consequences while driving, because she can’t expect for every single driver on the road to stay out of the way when there are many other drivers who do not drive safely like Jordan. What this may imply about Jordan’s social class is they she is either middle or high class. This is because the average person would be careful while driving because if you get in a crash, you can hurt someone and your car will get severely damaged and you’ll need to spend a lot of money to repair the vehicle. Social class is represented by settings in the novel with the two different locations East Egg and West Egg which East Egg is the land of “new money”, while West Egg is the land of “old money” and is described as the least fashionable of the two. Tom Buchanan is able to fit into the high and middle class because while he lives in East Egg, Tom is not extremely rich but is not poor.

The new information that can be implied about Gatsby based on Mr. Wolfsheim that Gatsby may be involved in some suspicious activities. Evidence that can support this claim is on page 70 when Mr. Wolfsheim says “I understand you’re looking for a business connection.”, to which Gatsby replies “Oh No!”, “this isn’t the man”, “this is just a friend. I told you we’d talk about that some other time.” and Gatsby then walks out to take a phone call. This scene is very questionable because it makes me wonder why Gatsby would immediately cut off Mr. Wolfsheim and say that Nick is just a friend. Another piece of evidence that can help support this claim is on page 71 when Nick asks Gatsby who Mr. Wolfsheim really is and Gatsby admits that Woflsheim is a gambler which makes it even more suspicious that he and Gatsby are going to talk about business connection with another man because Gatsby could possibly be involved in gambling also. This contrasts with the image that Gatsby tried to portray because he tries to come off as an honest, classy, and trustworthy man and this evidence can only put a bad reputation on Gatsby.

Gatsby explains what the green light stands for when Daisy comes over with Nick and he tells her that she always has a green light that burns all night and it is stated that Gatsby was absorbed in what he had just said possibly because it occurs that the colossal significance of the light had now vanished forever. I think that the green light represents jealousy personally because of what the color green can represent in the real world which is jealously and money. I believe that the light does not signify money however, and signifies the jealousy that Gatsby had while Daisy was happy with Tom. And the significance of the light had vanished in that moment because Gatsby was finally alone with Daisy and had gotten her to come over to his house like he wanted, abolishing the envy that he and for Tom and Daisy’s relationship.

Gatsby’s real upbringing is different from what he originally told Nick because it is revealed that his original/legal name is actually James Gatz and not Jay Gatsby. His parents were shiftless and unsuccessful farm people, and his imagination kept him from accepting them as his parents at all. Another difference is Gatsby originally told Nick he attended Oxford college as a family tradition however, the truth is James Gatz attended the Lutheran college of St. Olaf in southern Minnesota. His actions as a young man reveal that Gatsby is he is hard working but also very selfish. The reason that Gatsby is hard working is because he was employed for Dan Cody and was in turn steward, mate, skipper, secretary, and jailor. However, Gatsby is selfish because of how he lacks acknowledgment for his parents and how he became contemptuous of them such as young virgins because they were ignorant.

Yes, Gatsby and Daisy do love each other and it is revealed when they are at the Buchanan house with Tom, Nick, and Jordan Baker. First, Gatsby admits his love for Daisy when he is arguing with Tom and is telling him about their past together and claims that Daisy never loved him. The book reads “Not seeing. No, we couldn’t meet. But both of us loved each other all that time, old sport, and you didn’t know.” Daisy however, admits her love to love to Gatsby at the beginning of the chapter after she requests Tom to make her a cold drink. On page 116 the quote says “As he left the room again she got up and went over to Gatsby and pulled his face down, kissing him on the mouth.” Tom also loves Daisy and he admits this while arguing with Gatsby at the Buchanan house, Gatsby tries to convince Tom that Daisy never loved him while they were married and Tom replies “She does, though. The trouble is that sometimes she gets foolish ideas in her head and doesn’t know what she’s doing. And what’s more I love Daisy too. Once in a while I go off on a spree and make a fool of myself, but I always come back and in my heart I love her all the time.” It is not stated if Nick loves any women in the book however, one person that can be considers as someone Nick loves is Gatsby, this is because of the way Nick admires Gatsby’s life and was so interested in getting to know him. Also, in Nicks eyes, Gatsby is very trustworthy and can not cause any harm.

The eyes can be represented as “all seeing” or always watching over the people within the story to judge the actions of others and to be a symbol of judgement in the story.

The Great Gatsby mentions the American Dream in chapter 6 when the truth is revealed about Gatsby’s true identity. Originally, Gatsby had told Nick that his parents had died and that he inherited money, but this is not true. The truth is that Gatsby’s parents were poor farmers and he actually never acknowledges them to anybody or himself almost as if they had died. At first he began working as a clam digger and salmon fisher then attended the Lutheran college of St. Olaf in southern Minnesota. Gatsby would do janitors work during this time to pay his way through college and was later employed by Dan Cody and did many different jobs for him such as steward, mate, skipper secretary, and jailor for 5 years up until Cody’s death. Gatsby’s backstory is a representation of the American dream because he came from a family of poor farmers and worked any jobs he could to go to school and be successful and the main idea of the American dream is being able to achieve success and wealth which Gatsby was able to do as shown by his house and other items such as his car.

The Great Gatsby Movie Review

I overall enjoyed the film the Great Gatsby and can say that I was not disappointed at all by the movie. The movie does a very good job at keeping on track with the original storyline in the book and keeping the story authentic throughout the time you are watching.

The movie begins with a quote that Nick's father told him when he was a younger boy however, the quote isn’t exactly stated as it is in the book. For example, the quote in the beginning of the movie says that Nick’s father told him to always try and see the good in people, but the original quote from the book would be “my father told me never to criticize others because they have not had the same advantages as I have been given”.

New scenes are also added in the movie which adds more details to the story and expands the imagination of the reader more to understand what was happening during these certain situations/events. One of the new scenes added is when Gatsby, Tom, Daisy, and Nick are at the Bunchanan’s apartment and Gatsby is telling Tom that Daisy is tired of her and wants to be with him instead. This begins tension between Tom and Gatsby until Gatsby blows up in Tom’s face yelling at him to shut up repeatedly until the room goes quiet. Gatsby’s reaction also ended up scaring Daisy causing her to leave the room to which Gatsby began to run after her to apologize for what he had done. While this did not happen in the book, this scene is a very intense moment and causes the viewer to feel many emotions while watching.

While the film does a good job at keeping the viewer engaged in the story and staying original, there are some scenes that can feel rushed to the viewer and do not accurately portray the book. One of the scenes that feels very rushed is after Gatsby is killed by Mr. Wilson. This is because in the story, after Gatsby dies, Nick makes many phone calls to all of Gatsby’s clothes friends inviting them to the funeral and in the movie this simply just does not happen. Instead, the scene skips over and shows the large amount of paparazzi and news reporters at Gatsby’s funeral taking pictures of his body while a dialogue of Nicks’ thoughts are being read.

Small differences such as these actually have a huge impact on the film especially for those who have read the book prior to watching and we’re expecting a full on picture representation of the whole book. While not every detail can match and some changes are bound to happen, the Great Gatsby overall is a very great film and I would highly recommend it to those who have already read the Great Gatsby, and even those who haven’t read the book who just want to learn the story. The film is entertaining and really expands the mind of the reader while being able to visualize the scenes in the book and just how the setting of the story actually looks.

The ideas in the text relate to my life in different ways. For example, one idea that was shared during Gatsby’s funeral is how many are there when you have something they want but are not when you’re gone. This idea was shared by the man wearing owl eye glasses at the funeral and relates to my life because many people have been in my life when it comes to going out places and having fun, however when I have gone through bad situations in my life and need somebody the same people aren’t there. Another one that can relate to my life is the idea of “new money” vs “old money” and this is a common problem is society where those who come from generational wealth typically think they are better than another person who may not have been wealthy their whole lives and earned success on their own. I see this a lot in my personal life where others will try to show off their materials to try and brag about the money they have when others, including myself, may not be in the same position.

The ideas of The Great Gatsby relate to the larger world because many of the ideas shown in the store actually can seen in our everyday lives.

The ideas of this story remind me of the show All American because one of the main ideas in The Great Gatsby is achieving the American dream, and in All American, the main character Spencer moves out of South Central and into Beverly Hills to attend High School and Play football, however there is still division because Spencer does not come from a wealthy family while the other student attending Beverly High do and they criticize and stereotype Spencer for where he’s from. This relates to the ideas of “New Money” and “Old Money” in the Great Gatsby because in East Egg all the residents have came from money while those in West Egg worked for their success and did not have anything handed down.
