The second speaker mentions how the people who feel America is not America to them all initially had hopes, dreams, and aspirations, but due to cruel reality, that dream was almost almost dead. But, towards the end the second speaker's voice is amplified with determination of making America an America for them. Making it an America where they can surpass the discriminations and injustices they face and thus, reviving their dreams.
-Josselyn

The poem mentions the idea that America never reached its true name and even today I personally believe it still hasn't. Many years later it still dosen't reach it's true name like the speaker wishes in the second to last stanza. There's been so much conflict to where it seems America will never reach its true name. -Angelina

Being the audience of today, you get this concept of how it was then from the perspective people in anguish. You can gather this cross comparison and think of how though we were instilled this dream within our very core, we were yet to be delivered. How this peace of mind of thinking of this "Dream" is all but lip service from these " "kings." We embellish the very thought of the dream, but never able to even see it with our own eyes. From then and now it shows that the definition of free has surely has changed, but the dream hasn't. Nothing more and nothing less of an illusion made by the "serf of kings."

the poem discuss the dying hopes of people working hard day by day to have nothing and feel empty. The 2nd speaker represents what every was feeling, which was the feeling of missing something. America to them wasn't how people voiced it out to be and they face a hard dark reality while losing all hopes and dreams of what America was supposed to be. I feel as if the first speaker was being ignorant to the issues represented by the second speaker , the 1st almost ignored till th very end what the 2nd speaker was talking about. I feel as if those two speakers were the two types of people in America , one who had money and weren't discriminated and then there was one struggling against discrimination and poverty. Lastly at the end it discusses gruesome topics to show everyone what its really like and to tell off the first speaker who spoke highly of America like it was sunshine and rainbows
- Kamryn

This poem continuously shows how even though America appears to be a land where your dreams can come true (which is what one of the speakers believes), it's not like this for everyone. For the minorities, they dream of all the riches but are instead faced with endless work and tasks that strain their bodies. However, the other speaker (who states that America was never America to them) does start being hopeful that one day America will be what it says it is- the land of the free and the land of dreams. Such can be seen when he says, "America was never America to me, And yet I swear this oath- America will be!"
-Grace K.

The speaker who believes that there never was an America that people dreamed it to be, can be assumed to not be white. This is inferred by knowing the past and even current events happening in America relating to race, and unfortunately there being a dominant race. Race has always been one of the biggest problems for this country, because if there is no sense of equality in race there will be no sense anywhere else. To think people really still do not believe that even if you are black, white, yellow, or purple you are still a human being. - kilie
