Their main occupation is hunting and gathering the fruits and other things. They never depend on others or on the Government subsidy of any kind. They hunt in the sea and in the forests for their feeding. They make tools and implements using materials that are available from their forest habitat, except iron. Since long they have been collecting iron from different sources like wrecked ships and later from the settlements/villages. Always the men make the hunting implements like bow (aav), arrow (patho) and chest guard (kekad)and the women make fishing net (botho) and cane baskets (ta-aika), which are used for collecting and gathering activities. There is, however, no gender restriction in using the artefacts, except that the widows are not supposed to use bow and arrow as the same had been destroyed with the death of her husband.

Jarawa Tribe is one of the important Tribal people in India and lived in Andaman Nicobar Islands. Jarawa Tribe's physical appearance is very strong, however, they had bad habits of taking more Opium and more quantity of Alcohol. Their surroundings caused diseases. So most fell ill and died. The subsequent made them migrate to western areas of Andaman Islands and made those places as their homelands. Their folk songs revolve around their material culture and hunting, fishing and gathering activities. Indigenous tribes are our heritage to be treasured and it remains our responsibility to help them sustain themselves in environments they have always lived in and not turn them into objects of tourist curiosity.

The Ongan, also called Angan, South Andamanese, is a phylum(group/family) of two Andamanese languages, Önge and Jarawa, spoken in the southern Andaman Islands.
It is spoken by the Jarawa people inhabiting the interior and south-central Rutland Island, central interior, and south interior South Andaman Island, and the west coast of Middle Andaman Island.

The Jarawa is a tribe of indigenous people in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The Jarawa are recognized as an Adivasi group in India. Along with other indigenous Andamanese peoples, they have inhabited the islands for several thousand years. The Jarawas are believed to be descendants of the Jangil tribe and it is estimated that they have been in the Andaman Islands for over two millennia. They are also believed to be the first successful tribe to move out of Africa, which leads to the theory, that they could be an African-Indian species, considering that most of the aspects of their way of living resembles to those of African tribes.

Jarawa Tribe- Hunting & Diet

The Jarawa Tribe is a nomadic tribe, they keep moving place to place in search of food. They are known to hunt wild pigs, monitor lizards, and other creatures with bows and arrows. They also catch fish using their nets and spears. These days they are even keeping dogs, which help them in hunting. They make their food by usually doing roasting, baking & boiling. The Jarawa Tribe also collect honey, different types of fruits, tubers, wild berries, jackfruit etc. Their diet is well balanced. They consume both terrestrial and aquatic resources, so they do not face much shortage of food.

The Jarawa tribe, cut off from the world we have today, have lived in the Andaman and Nicobar islands for thousands of years. But they have diminished quite significantly. So now coming to the question of the day. ARE THE JARAWA TRIBES EXTINCT? Well, no they are NOT. but yes, they are on the brink of extinction! In 2019 covid was able to reach the Jarawa tribe. And it became one of the main reasons why so many people were forced into isolation and quite a few died.

Jarawa Tribe - Shelters

The Jarawa's are a nomadic tribe. They don't live in a permanent home, as they keep moving around. They usually live in small huts, known as chadda huts.
About 8 branches are used as supporting pillars, in the houses they live in. On these pillars, long branches are tied with bark strips. The roofs of these houses are thatched with long cane leaves and a kind of palms leaves. Both men and women take part in collection of materials as well as in construction of shelters. To construct a chadda hut they require one to one and a half-hour hour.
