-Evidence with Literary Devices
"The kids bend trees and bounce between cars and dangle upside down from knees and almost break like fancy museum vases you can't replace." (Simile)
-What is Happening?
Esperanza is describing how crazy the Vargas kids are, and that they are so crazy that they are doing things that are dangerous and stupid.
-The Theme/Big Idea
Cisneros is showing the reader that Esperanza lives in a bad, run-down place. This is being conveyed because if the place was well-kept, there would be someone to look over these crazy kids so they don't get hurt. This is used better with literary devices because it describes how crazy these kids are.

This shows that the Mango Street community is not as nice as some other neighborhoods in the area, because nicer neighborhoods would have a way to combat such crazy behavior, instead just ignoring it.

(Syntax)
-What is Happening?
Esperanza is telling the reader that the Vargases were brought up in a crazy life, where things have been rough in their upbringing, with a father leaving and an overwhelmed mother.
-Theme/Big Idea
The Vargas kids are so out of control because of a rough childhood. Things that happened in the Vargas kids' childhood was a father leaving and a mother that was overwhelmed by the task of raising a family by herself. These events are typically found in impoverished areas, which the reader can assume that Mango Street is.
