The Manhattan Project was a research and development undertaking during World War 2. This project produced the first nuclear weapons. It was led by the United States with the help of the United Kingdom and Canada. It was under the direction of Major General Leslie Groves (U.S Army Corps of Engineers), and Robert Oppnheimer (A Nuclear physicist who was the director of the place that actually designed the bombs). Two types of atomic bombs were made and used during the war. One was a simple Gun type fission weapon, and the other being a complex implosion type nuclear weapon. This project also gathered intelligence on the German nuclear weapon project. Despite security, the Soviets were able to penetrate into the program.

They are fission based nuclear weapons. Their design allows their fissile material into a supercritical mass by the use of the "gun" method. This was called "Little Boy" during the time of the War and was detonated over Hiroshima. This weapon yields a power of 50 megatons. The implosion type nuclear weapon had an gives out a shock wave after hitting. The weapon used during World War 2 was called "Fat Man". The "Little Boy" and "Fat Man" were launched together.

Should they have dropped the bomb on Japan?

I believe they should have. Yes, it's a very hard decision because you are ultimately killing innocent lives. But what if Japan fired first? They would've killed innocent people as well. No matter if we bombed them first or they bombed us, people would've been killed it. I believe that in order to stop combat and win the war we needed to drop the bomb.
