I think the start of applying the seven characteristics is using critical thinking about the curriculum and lesson planning that I do. Once my students arrive, my goal is to get to know each student, work with them where they are to provide the education they need to function in the world and create a better world around them. The classroom needs to be a place of community and a safe place for learning and growing. "Once we know better, we can do better."

First I would get to know all my students so they know I care. Then we as a class will get to know their fellow classmates through ice breakers. A part of building a safe environment for student to learn is building trust from those students.

My hope is to think of ways that can help our students and myself get to know each other better in an engaging way on a platform where everyone feels safe to share their own stories and experiences. Encouraging them to be openminded to new information and gain more perspectives can help us grow together and become a community within those four walls. I think whole classroom group activity, pairing and grouping students could help them build their relationships and begin to trust each other. Additionally, I hope to think outside the box, giving them opportunity to share in a more playful and fun way that may be more exciting to them. For example, incorporating cultural differences could look something like - "your homework tonight is to write about a specific food or meal that that may be unique to your life, and explain why, then tomorrow we will share with the class". Identifying strengths and weaknesses within the group can also help structure you teaching practices and benefit the students learning process.

I think that consistently utilizing the 7 Characteristics of Multicultural Education according to Nieto will allow me opportunities to create an environment where students will feel safe and heard, building lasting relationships where they know they can grow as individuals. Every student will have an opportunity to help create a community cognizant of other's opinions, thoughts, traditions, and backgrounds.

I would apply Nieto's characteristics in my classroom by getting know understand my students' needs individually and apply them as a whole into my instruction. Teachers often try the "one size fits all" method in their classroom, meaning they teach all students the same. This method does not work because some students learn at a different level than other students and demand different needs.

The 7 Characteristics of M.E. described by Nieto will be important to keep in mind when planning everything in my classroom. From classroom procedures and lessons to interacting with students on a daily basis. M.E. is going to be the foundation of my classroom.
My goal is to create a class culture where growth mindsets are the norm, where students know that it is okay to make mistakes, where differences are accepted and not a target to be made fun of, and an environment that promotes critical thinking so my students can be self sufficient not just in class but in the real world.

Second, I will let them express themselves and their unique cultures so we can all learn about each other and create a bond. Through these conversations we as students and teacher will create a more safe and involved environment.

If a student fails I want them to know they tried something one way. Now they have an opportunity to try it another way.
