Purpose of the Activity

In this activity, students create a pattern by threading beads onto yarn according to a grid coding template. While following the pattern, students develop algorithmic thinking, attention, problem-solving skills, and fine motor skills. At the same time, they use their creativity by choosing their own colors.

• Large-hole beads (so that the yarn can pass through easily)

• Thick yarn or wool thread

• A thick wooden stick (to hold and fix the yarns)

• Grid coding template

• Colored pencils

• Scissors

Steps of the Activity

1️⃣ Examining the Coding Template

Students are given a grid coding template. Each square on the grid represents one bead. Students examine the pattern or figure they will create and try to understand the design.

2️⃣ Creating a Color Plan

Students color the squares on the grid according to the colors they want to use. In this step, students are free to choose their own colors, including the background color.

3️⃣ Preparing the Yarns

The yarns are cut into equal lengths and tied to a thick wooden stick. This helps the yarn hang down straight so that students can easily thread the beads.

4️⃣ Understanding the Coding Logic

The following logic is explained to the students:

• Each square = 1 bead

• The color of the square = the color of the bead to be used

Students follow the template from left to right and from top to bottom.

5️⃣ Threading the Beads

Students start threading the beads onto the yarn by following the colored grid template. Large-hole beads make it easier for students to pass the yarn through the beads.

6️⃣ Checking the Pattern

During the process, students compare their bead arrangement with the template to check if they are following the pattern correctly.

7️⃣ Completing the Work

After all beads are threaded, the pattern appears. The ends of the yarn are tied to secure the work and create a decorative craft.
