Plickers is a set of images that you print out (lots of people do it on cardstock and laminate them for durability) that can be easily scanned with a teacher device. The teacher asks a multiple choice question and students hold up their card straight to choose A, rotate it 90 degrees for B, upside down for C, and another 90 degrees for D. The letters are tiny on the card, so students can't look around the room and see each other's answers. The students hold up their cards and wait while the teacher holds up their smartphone or ipad to scan the codes all of the codes at once. The app will tally the data and you can visually show the results to the students as a chart.

We've all had a chance--with varying levels of technology challenges--to dabble with Kaltura. One of the limits of Kaltura is that you cannot edit your videos. You can clip out chunks in the beginning, middle, and end, but you can't put two clips together or add anything else to it. For that, you need video editing software. Macs come with iMovie, which can take a little getting used to, but another freely available option is WeVideo. Here, you can upload video, record directly from your webcam, or even do a screencast like with Kaltura. You can add titles, transitions, music, and voice-over narration. You can piece together multiple video clips. The free version does have some limits and it does add a watermark to your video.


Another free way to make videos that you maybe hadn't considered is to use PowerPoint. What?? Yes, you can record screencasts in your slides by going to Insert--Media--Screen Recording. Once you record your screencast, you can trim the beginning or end by clicking on it, then going to Playback--Trim Video. You can also voice over your PowerPoint slides as save it as a video file by going to Slide Show--Record Slide Show. This puts your slides into presentation mode and turns on your microphone. You simply narrate your slides as you move through them, then end the show. To export your slides as a video file, go to File--Save a Copy then select MPEG-4 Video from the file type drop down list.
