I Never Stop Listening to Dodie Clark

There was a time in my life where the only music I ever put on was Dodie Clark. It might have been a year of non-stop Dodie. The more I can interpret the musical tones and the lyrics, the more my relationship with it grows. The first time I hear a new song, I have a quick opinion of it. As I hear it again and again, my relationship deepens.

Because Dodie is a Youtuber, her musical career has spanned 6 years, starting when she was 16 to now, at age 22. Of course, she has grown as a person over those years, and she has gained more experiences to sing about. She came out as bisexual, experienced a bit of heartbreak, and developed several mental disorders. Experiencing her music in order will seem like a flawless transition, but compare a recent song to one of her very first, and we can see how different she has become.

The Antlers - Hospice

This album in particular must be experienced as a whole, because listening to only one song and forgetting the rest is disregarding the story. Hospice is also their most popular album, so it is a good place to start to listen to the rest of their albums.

"It's true that we can have clean, short, and ruthless relationships with our music...But often we want our friends, traditions, and beliefs to be beyond understanding... We want to try to know everything there is to know about what can't be completely known." Pg. 106

When I have a preferred collection of music, I am expressing to others that I have delved deeper than the casual listener. This music taste is "mine," therefore I know a bit more about it. But I cannot know everything; that would take away the mystery. We don't want to understand everything about the song just from one listen.
