Those who have strep throat, and are on antibiotics to treat it, remain contagious for up to 24-48 hours once they have started taking antibiotics. Once the individual is no longer contagious, it is common for the symptoms to begin receding. With antibiotics strep throat symptoms commonly last 3-5 days. If left untreated symptoms can last 10-12 days and complications, such as contraction of other streptococcal diseases, increase dramatically. This disease is curable.

Streptococcus pyogenes Description

The causative agent of strep throat is called Streptococcus pyogenes. S.pyogenes also forms a category called Group A Beta Hemolytic Strep which is responsible for a number of diseases, however strep throat is the most epidemic. There are currently 80 known strains of GABHS antigens that have been divided according to cell wall structure and the presence of a particular M protein. The bacterium attributed to strep throat stains gram positive and is spherical in shape. It occurs in either a chained or paired arrangement and is a nonmotile, nonsporeforming organism whose cells range from 0.6-1.0 micrometers in diameter. The metabolism of S. pyogenes is fermentative, catalase-negative facultative anaerobe that requires enriched mediums containing blood in order to grow. It is a DNase positive organism, meaning it is capable of producing the exoenzyme DNase that is a catalyst in DNA processes. Beta-hemolytic streptococci produce a toxin that forms a clear zone of hemolysis on blood agar, demonstrating its ability to destroy red blood cells. This hemolysis is attributed to toxins formed by Group A streptococci called streptolysins. Streptolysins can destroy not only red blood cells, but also the white blood cells responsible for fighting off bacteria and disease, as well as other body cells. The organism is orange/coral color and Under ideal conditions, it has an incubation period of 1 to 3 days. Streptococcus moves through the act of Pseudophia which is when it extends and contracts itself so it can move along. The organism does require oxygen and it performs respiration around the 20% oxygen level. Streptococcus does not grow larger, it simply morphs shape and performs asexual reproduction or binary fission. It needs glucose but doesn’t excrete.

Streptococcal bacteria are highly contagious. They can spread through airborne droplets when someone with the infection coughs or sneezes, or through shared food or drinks. You can also pick up the bacteria from a doorknob or other surface and transfer them to your nose, mouth or eyes.
