However, I would like to point out that the North was very industrious and didn't need man-power like the South did. The South was based on agriculture. There were tons of plantations (Practically everyone lived on a plantation) and it was pretty warm since it was a Southern region. Religion and education wasn't well developed in the South either. The South also had the ability to plant crops, so the entire country heavily relied on the South for their food and other products like cotton and tobacco. They did need people to help with maintaining the plantations. Don't necessarily want to admit it, but without slavery, there wouldn't have been an economy. They go from being a slave to a farm hand. The other thing was to give them the opinion to leave and become a freeman if they so desire. They would no longer be able to live or be supported by plantation if they were to leave, however. That's the slavery part. The other part was to try and minimize some of the differences between the North and South. While it's good to have diversity with skills, it's also good to make areas self-sufficient. The Civil War happened because of disagreement on what is best. This disagreement sprung about due to differences and the other side not willing to understand their counterpart.
