         <description><![CDATA[<ul><li><strong>Cause(s) of the event: </strong>Because of the dropping of the atomic bomb it lead to mistrust between the two but also caused Russia to realize that without any of the new bombs that US had an advantage over them. Due to already increasing tensions this leads to a competition to become stronger than each other.</li><li>A description of what the event was: They began competing with each other to see who could make the most powerful weapon, mostly nuclear.&nbsp;</li><li>Date(s) of the event: 1949 - 1991</li><li>Key individuals/groups involved: Soviet Union, The United States, Truman, Joseph Stalin, NATO, and the Warsaw pact.</li><li>Was the event a victory for Democracy or Communism?: Democracy.</li><li>Brinkmanship: Going till the edge of war by making many making many nuclear bombs, weapons, planes, and add more to the military. Lead to the arms race.</li><li>Deterrence: US used nuclear deterrence through actively threatening the USSR if they used nuclear weapons against them.</li><li>Strategic Arms Limitations Talks (SALT I and SALT II): Talks aimed to reduce the amount of nuclear weapons being made.</li><li>Strategic Defense Initiative (Star Wars): Was an attempt to make something to be able to destroy nuclear missiles from space. Didn’t work out.</li></ul><div><br></div>]]></description>

         <title>Cuba Missile Crisis </title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div><br></div><ul><li>Cause(s) of the event: Cuba had kicked out Americans and slowly began a journey to becoming a communist state with support from Russia. Russia planned to build missiles in Cuba in order to deter the US from the Caribbean and to be in a closer strike range of Russia.</li><li>A description of what the event was: The Soviet Union tried building missiles in Cuba while the US tried to resolve it peacefully. America eventually found out about the missiles and created a naval blockade in hopes of deterring the Soviets from using it. It worked and later they got a fax offering to remove the missiles; the second, is more stroppy and demands that America also remove missiles from Turkey.</li><li>Date(s) of the event: October 16 1962 - October 28 1962</li><li>Key individuals/groups involved: Russia, Cuba, and the US.</li><li>Was the event a victory for Democracy or Communism?:&nbsp;Democracy</li><li>Bay of Pigs: An unsuccessful plan to kick out the communists in Cuba using only Cuban-American refugees.</li><li>Fidel Castro: Leader of the Cuban Communists.</li><li>John F. Kennedy: Made many of the decisions on behalf of the US, also the president.</li><li>Nikita Khrushchev: Was the one who decided to put missiles in Cuba.</li></ul>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<ul><li>Cause(s) of the event: Russia, US, Great Britain, and France all owned a section of Germany after the war. Russia didn’t want interference in the socialist state.</li><li>A description of what the event was: They began dividing Germany and trying to kick out the other three countries.</li><li>Date(s) of the event:&nbsp;</li><li>Key individuals/groups involved: Russia, US, Great Britain, and France.</li><li>Was the event a victory for Democracy or Communism?: Democracy because the berlin wall was unsuccessful and the marc</li><li>Berlin Airlift:&nbsp; Berlin was in Russian territory but was also divided into four sections. However, Russia wanted Berlin for themselves. Russia closed all major highways and roads to try and kick out the other countries because they were hoping they would run out of supplies and food. The US and the allies instead of retreating sent supplies through airships.</li><li>Berlin Wall: Russia had set up a wall in order to keep the western countries out of their section of Germany and to remove, US, Great Britain, and France.</li><li>Iron Curtain:&nbsp; Was the metaphorical barrier set up by Russia separating the Communist countries from the non Communist countries.</li><li>Marshall Plan: Was a reconstruction plan from the US to provide aid to western European countries damaged by the war and to prevent the spread of communism. Was the beginning of the cold war and important in the creation of NATO. Was very successful and renewed Europe just how they wanted. This also prevented the spread of communism because of the dominance US had in Western Europe</li></ul><div><br></div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<ul><li>Cause(s) of the event: Russia wanted control of the French Indonesia so they began fighting France for control of the country. France then established the state of Vietnam in the southern part of the country Ho Chi Minh became the leader of the north Vietnamese Workers party. The&nbsp; north became communist and the south was not so the Viet Cong wanted to overthrow southern Vietnam.</li><li>A description of what the event was: War broke out in Vietnam and the US stepped in to prevent the south from becoming a communist country following their policy of containment. This failed however and they later signed a treaty ending direct US involvement in the war.</li><li>Date(s) of the event: November 1 1955 - April 30 1972</li><li>Key individuals/groups involved: Soviet Union, US, France, and Vietnam.</li><li>Was the event a victory for Democracy or Communism?: Communism.&nbsp;</li><li>Ho Chi Minh: Was the prime minister of Vietnam.&nbsp;</li><li>Vietcong: Fought in South Vietnam for Northern Vietnamese using guerilla tactics.</li><li>Vietnamization: Was the US's ideas to slowly leave the Vietnam war by transferring their weapons and supplies to Southern Vietnam.</li><li>17th Parallel: Was the barrier between the north and southern Vietnam.</li></ul><div>&nbsp;</div><div><br><br></div><div><br></div>]]></description>
