I think deep down inside its an animalistic primal need to survive or win, whichever you wanna call it.  There are many things in the world that inspire people to want to live and not give up but i think its much simpler than that. People just want to live, they want to survive no matter what. People want to be great, no one wants to be forgotten and left behind. So I believe that the will to survive is inspired by the need to stay in the "game" and the survival of the fittest. Survival of the fittest is the belief that nature and life is all a competition and we are all trying to win at it. Some may lose because of the bad cards they were dealt but at the end of the day none of that matters but winning, living and coming out on top. If someone was in  an extreme environment they would do whatever it takes to live.  For example in social studies we learned about some of the first people to start cannibalism. It was a family trying to survive with limited food and water out in the wild. They ran out of resources and all they had left was each other and their will to survive.  The only person left standing was the father. They all ate each other one by one. They wanted to live so much so that they didn't care about each other. It didn't matter what stood in the way even eating his own children he needed to live. Even with the scary possibility of being all alone, he refused to die. What I think inspires certain peoples will to survive is that they would start to think of important things and people in your life and begin to think that you not only doing the things you do for only yourself but for others too. Even though some people might be in bad times with the right help they can get to a better one as when something bad comes a good thing will always follow. For example in Khadijah's personal essay she stated "Sometimes I would cry about it. But the first thing that my mom did when we were in a new place was enroll me. She saw that school was really important to me. She would use her last money to do laundry to make sure I had clean clothes to wear, so I didn't feel self-conscious. She always had my back.”

For me personally, I think peoples will to do and have better then what they currently have inspires people to survive in an extreme environment. My want to be successful; my want to give my kids better than what I have; my want to please my family; my want to be one of the best, has gotten me through my whole academic career, especially during this very unfamiliar and new schooling experience. Similar to Khadijah’s want to be the best and live a better life. That same want and determination got Khadijah into an Ivy League college even when all the odds were against her. But also people’s fears can push them and inspire them through hard times. I fear failure like many other people. I can’t stand the thought of a grade less then a 90 let alone a failing grade. I literally gag at the thought of not having a high paying job (Not saying if you don’t have a high paying you’re a failure). I hate getting anything wrong, no matter how big or small. I start crying when I can’t comprehend something especially school work. Anything that I feel can lead to failure scares me. I don’t want society to look at me and see a failure. I don’t want my parents to look at me and see a failure. I don’t want my kids to look at me and see a failure. I definitely don’t want to look at myself and see a failure.
