Grade level 2-8

Serrevallo Strategy 5.30 Problem-Solution structure for persuasive writing pg. 197
I chose this book to teach the problem-solution text structure.

How The book Relates:
The first part of the book is all about the problem with plastic pollution.
Page 10 Presents the problem with a heading, "A problem with Plastic." It then goes on to say, "The next spring, the female does not return, and the male fulmar is alone. He doesn't know that his mate died because her stomach was filled with plastic. Scientists find her body washed up on the shore and discover the plastic when they examine her."

The first half of the book presents various problems with plastic. The second half of the book presents solutions.
Page 45's heading reads, "You can help!"
"Plastic pollution is a BIG problem but young environmentalists all over the world are proving that you don't have to be an adult to make a difference. From the Netherlands to the Bahamas, and here in the United states, young people are attacking the problem of plastics through thoughtful planning and scientific study, creative problem-solving and community organization."

I would use this as mentor text for all the ways you could use headings and subheadings text structures to help organize informational texts into coherent sections.

Page 10 has the heading, "Birthstone Myths and Facts. That is followed by a subheading for each stone, January, February, March, April, May, June, July, August, September, October, November, and December. Under those subheadings are more sub-subheadings for "Old-School Myths" with information and "Rock-Solid Facts" which is followed by more information.
The book is organized this way throughout all about stones, gems, metals, and other minerals and how they are used and make "bling".
